I've finally managed to get an honest response out of iBurst. Contrary to the bull that they have previously told us, the current situation in respect of torrents is intentional, that is, not a "problem". The title of this topic is a direct quote, copied out of an email from them.

I guess I won't be renewing my contract.

What makes me so mad is that they refer to this as "shaping". I think less than 500 Bytes per second may as well be blocked - and for most torrent sites, you can't even connect at all.
 
They told me that a while ago, C&C3 uses P2P connection for custom games, I inquired how to fix it and the reply was basically "we cant open p2p for single applications".
 
BitTorrent was always BitTrickle for me too but I get better results from gnutella, ares, openft...
 
i cant understand we *pay* for *our* bandwidth but we cant do what *we* want to do with it? whats the point then?

FTP is unshaped.

But the speeds on P2P were exactly what they should have been already. They were shaped to 64kb as iBurst advertised.

What exactly should they be now? I still use unshaped P2P so its not a problem, and my torrents were okay last time I tried.
 
Call Telkom all the names you want. But it's pretty sweet getting a torrent on a shaped account (4Mbps) reaching 200kB/s. My G9 cost/MB pales into significance. My only worry is that I might be back to iBurst for a month or two after I move.
 
Before I get capped my Torrents run fantastically. This month in fact I managed to download 20Gb on my 9Gb account. Some screwup with their bandwidth manager - after downloading 10Gb, they figured I had downloaded 500Mb (am downloading SCI-FI serials since DSTV screwed us and removed SCI-FI channel).
 
Now please pray tell, how do you achieve this without resorting to tunnelling and using a overseas server?
 
Yes, beacause the rest of us on "smaller" packages find "speeds" of up to 2kbs..paying R300+ for bandwith CANNOT be called a small package dammit!!

What do they call their R49 packages then?? Handouts?

It seems to me that people on the 9Gb accounts are getting results..this is unfair in my opinion...no?

If I buy 2G and you buy 4G on say Openweb (shaped of course), you get more or less the same speeds etc. torrent wise and with regular usage...correct me if i'm wrong, but shouldn't it be the case with Iburst too?

Talk with your feet, move to somebody else. If there's no ADSL available in your area, then MTN and Vodacom both offer 2GB for R400. And Telkom is trying to improve ADSL availability before Neotel starts up, so perhaps check with them again. TBH I prefer having a 512k line with constant and almost guaranteed speed over a 1mbps line that's shaped to death on everything except http.

This iBurst situation is getting out of hand and the only way they will catch a big wake up is if their subscriber base is substantially reduced.

Believe me I would..like now, but like lots of people I signed up at the beginning for a 24 month contract,when as a matter of fact everything was going smooth at 300kbs etc. Thinking this is the way to go...and for a while it was, but then THEY changed everything. Now we are stuck, going downstream without a paddle...only way I can move is by paying all my outstanding payments.....and receiving nothing in return.. I am doing that already on a month to month basis...
 
Contracts are a no-no regardless of provider :) Takes away your freedom of choice. When you guys do eventually move, rather save up a bit for a modem/router/data card, apply for a month to month contract, and know that you can leave whenever you want to.
 
The modem was included in the package...seemed a good deal..ugh

Good advice a little too late....Honestly don't know what Iburst has against Torrents...
 
It is quite obvious from the earlier post about CAPEX (too lazy to search for it now)

iBurst don't want torrents on their network. They want to dictate to me what I can use the service for and that is just e-mail and HTTP. Who the FSCK gives them the right to dictate to me how I can and cannot use what I FSCKING WELL PAID FOR! FSCK YOU iBURST (PTY) LTD. This isn't a FSCKING DICTATORSHIP, not yet anyway!

Noooooo you see, they want to get more subs i.e. the subscriber numbers up, I am sure you've heard how they advertise on 5FM and on the lamp poles. Now they want the subs, but they DON'T want to pay for more bandwidth so they figure that if they kick torrent users off they will have a nice solution and not have to spend a cent extra, and they can just act dumb when questioned by journalists, rpm, or customers. The problem is that this worked, for a few weeks anyhow. Others, including myself then decided to show them who is boss and made a plan.

As I have noticed, Rudolph is not particularly interested in this story nor will anyone pick this and run with it and get some answers out of that miserable company. Everyone is still on about ADSL and Telkom and that seems to keep everyone occupied. iBurst pretty much raises the same level of interest as Sentech mywireless in this forum
