i was wondering what you simple folk(we all simple, thats why we got consoles, not pc's) thought the greatest console of all time was. i think the ps2 and for handheld would be the Game Boy

Those Sega exclusives all kicked ass!

Sonic, Shinobi, Phantasy Star, Ristar, Outrun, Comix Zone etc.
Earthworm Jim was awesome too even though it wasn't exclusive.

Funny, gamespot (I think, video's on gametrailers or gamevideos) actually ran a "top 10 consoles of all time top", they came out with the PSOne and I'm going to agree. it took gaming from nerd to mainstream.

Greatest console of all time?

Impossible question...

The console that got me into gaming was the NES... Compare that to a PS3 or Xbox 360 and it sucks....

My vote for the most influential consoles of all time.
1. NES <-- The original INHO
2. Sony PS1 <-- The first cross over
3. Xbox 1 <-- Online ability

Gamecube. First system I bought after starting work - so I had money to spend on games. Before it was 2 games a year (birthday and Christmas) so I spent more time on PC playing copied games.

The Dreamcast. Ahead of its time and still has games being developed for it in the US. Many classic games originated from it which made the PS2 famous, Soul Calibur being one of them.

Check on gamefabrique.com, a lot of those games are available.

Snes without a doubt.(and dreamcast,nes)
I was the only kid in diepriver with one, and although everybody mocked it, when i showed them my copy of street fighter 2 they turned green with envy!
Ah those were the days.

it has to be the ps2, its been selling for years and people are still buying them for over R1000 even when the xbox 360/ps3/wii is out.

Hmm, I would actually honestly say it goes to both the Wii and the DS. I know it's still early, but even if they both stopped selling tomorrow, they have disrupted the market in a way that no other console has before, and their importance is the message they brought with them.

Their sheer success in the market is a big finger and wake up call to everyone to say "It's not about the darn box or how pretty the pictures are, it's about people having fun". The success of that message is obvious and it's made everyone (Look at EA and Ubi's latest 90 degree shift in focus) take notice.

Dreamcast was my baby but almost cried when it tanked.
And its emulation capabilities were awesome!

But the greatest console for me must be nes.
Its that underpowered toaster-looking console that had beautifully playable games that will simply never forget.
Remember discovering those warpzones for the first time on mario bros?

And n64 with mario64 and Nights on sega saturn oh the jems
So glad sega make games for all.

Actually I would say that the SNES was the best, but due to its lack of support in SA I have to go with the Mega Drive.

Defintely the Dreamcast - i'm still playing Ecco, Metropolis Street racer, Worms, karuga and Street Fighter 3! A compact, quiet and powerful machine, its a pity EA never supported it :(

playstation 1 was the best machine imo...
too many good games and game sagas started with it.. (gran turismo, gta, tekken etc)

Greatest console?
For me it's a coin toss between the Dreamcast and the N64. Many many hours spent with my mates playing Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on the n64. Shenmue I and II for the dreamcast was also top notch.

For me the ultimate Game console was the gamecube... so many excellent games

Viewtifull Joe 1 and 2
A few Zelda games
Resident Evil 4
Ikaruga
etc
etc

I expect teh Wii, with its many awesome games to supercede the GC tho'

Had one as well, had some great fun with it :D

In 1982, the VCS becomes “2600” until Atari is sold in 1984, followed by new versions “5200” and “7800”. However, the 2600 continued to be produced and new games will appear until 1991. The VCS/2600 console thus lived for 14 years, a record longevity never equaled since by any console or computer.

Aah yes, good old Sega. I used to play Gunstar Heroes, Sonic and Golden Axe for many an hour back in the day. The release of MKIII on it nearly turned me into a hermit :D

It's a pity the SNES was so scarce in SA. It was actually quite a bit more powerful than the Megadrive/Genesis. I recall seeing reviews in old gaming mags where 99% of the time the SNES version of any game beat out the Sega counterpart.

NES (aka Golden China as we know it). The greatest console ever. Period.

I think there are different answers.
But lets not get confused between greatest and most successful although to a degree that has to come into it!

Greatest has to be the ps1, as Doobi said it brought Gaming to the mainstream and suddenly it was everywhere, it was cool to be a gamer.
