CANBERRA (Reuters) - Australian Prime Minister John Howard called on Friday for international cricket authorities to take a stand against Zimbabwe as he compared the tactics of President Robert Mugabe to those of the World War Two Nazis.

The Australian government is considering legal action to prevent the country's world champion cricket team from touring Zimbabwe in September, infuriated by Mugabe's brutal crackdown on political opponents.

"The stories of torture and brutality, the names of 600 members of the opposition party being taken from a computer by the secret police and every one of those homes visited, the people tortured and bashed up. That's the sort of thing the Gestapo did," Howard told Australian radio.

Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said a minimum $2 million fine the team was liable to pay for scrapping its tour contract may not apply if the government intervened to bar the visit.

"We're looking at whether there would be any legal basis for the government, if you like, banning the tour," Downer told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio. "Obviously the onus would fall on the government, but there would be no fine paid at all."

The government has offered to cover any resulting fine, but is concerned the money may end up in the hands of Mugabe or senior members of his government and security forces.

Downer on Thursday met officials from Cricket Australia (CA) and the Australian Cricketers' Association (ACA) in Melbourne, but they failed to reach an immediate agreement.

Howard said the international cricket community and the sport's governing body, the International Cricket Council, had a humanitarian responsibility to help pressure Mugabe for reform.

"I am jammed between my distaste for the government getting involved in something like this and my even greater distaste for giving a propaganda victory to Robert Mugabe," Howard said.

Zimbabwean cricket has been in crisis for the past few years. The country is still recognised by the International Cricket Council, though the sport's ruling body has currently withdrawn its test status.

Countries that refuse to tour the African state can be sanctioned but Australian leg-spinner Stuart MacGill lodged a personal protest in 2004.

Shortly after his announcement, Australia's tour was cancelled and no fines were imposed. Later that year, England's planned tour of the country was also postponed after the ICC took away Zimbabwe's test status.

Amazing how that word is part of the lexicon. Howard should know as his government is guilty of the same (willful neglect and abrogation of aborigines.) Nevermind his support of Rendition, torture, and illegal imprisonment. Hypocrites. But ya, let's point at Bob. I mean why not just call him an Islamofascist Fundamentalist Terrorist killer: that should bring justice!

(Not that I support Bob in any way but these fascists should really keep their language to themselves!)
 
Well, from some things I recall reading, Australian detention centres for illegal immigrants are comparable to Nazi concentration camps.

Critics have described the centres, many located in remote rural locations, as places where inhumane conditions and brutality are the norm.

The real question is "why does he use the language?"

Why is the word part of his lexicon (and why is it broadcast as such to the people of australia, ie, the word nazi?)

Could it be to divert attention from the Real Nazis? Could it be to confuse people so they don't look to the actions and implications of their own government?

(must ask: how we ended up with a bunch of Nazis leading world government and even though they have been rumbled why are they still in power!?) And most important: why does nobody speak the truth (though it is out there) and look to their own hypocrisy?!

I'm no Howard, but I call Disney Nazis all the time! :p

Note: I know the story line of the above link. They are still Nazis though!
 
Lets analyse the comparison:

NAZI - Socialist totalitarian regime that believed themselves to be the master race and wished to remove all dissenting opinions, and "weak" races from the planet. Jews were considered a separate race and tests for bumps on head and other inane "indicators" were common. Those that failed the tests were shipped to be exterminated. The jews were not the only people targetted by the NAZIs, there were gypsies, blacks, asians etc. The SS and secret police were relentless in tracking down dissenting opinion and eliminating it. The NAZI were not above using children as warriors in their war.

Mugabe + ZANUPF - Socialist totalitarian regime that believe themselves to be the master race and wish to remove all dissenting opinions, and whites from the planet. They pursued the prosperous white farmers and killed them en-mass. They also killed the farm workers who tried to protect the white farmers. They openly target people of dissenting opinion and remove them. They caused a problem by forcing poor people to settle in one place, then removed the problem a few years later by bulldozing the houses, in winter. Many died. Oh yeah, they are not above using kids as warriors in their crusades.

Currently, I call the idiot Mbeki the leader but only because I have to, by popular demand. How does the ANC compare to Mugabe. Lets see: Farm murders - check, disarming populace - check, blaming problems on whites - check, reluctance to relinquish control - check, manic need to increase control - check, acts above the law - check, changing constitution to remove judicial oversight (amendment 14) - check, Populace feeling like "Oh gd we are all going to die" - check.
