Households with income of > R8k more targeted by criminals

Well well... doesn't that fly in the face of what some people have been trying to say of late?

I've been a victim of crime 6 times in the last year

What is more frightening is that poor is defined up to R8000, after which, you are presumably "rich".

Now R8000, let's see.
Tax? 20% or so? = R20 of every R100, or R1600.
R6400 nett.

Average house (some article flying around here somewhere) = R910 000, or +- R9000 per month. Ooops. Ding, you lose.

Ok, that was average, let's say a little old 50squares of town house = R450 000 = R4500 per month. Oops, pesky levies etc = R800 = R5300.

R1100 left. Nice. Best you not want that Medical Aid - government hospitals ROCK!

Nice pair of walking shoes required - no way you can afford a taxi everyday, let alone a car....

Ok, snotty comments aside, how on earth is R8000 considered "not poor"?

I'm not singled out - I know of many of my neighbours being robbed rather frequently as well.

Fair enough but that really doesn't tell anyone interested in facts anything useful.
Is six times a year the average for your neighbourhood? Is it the average for neighbourhoods with a similar average income?

I have a neighbour 3 houses down who claims to have been robbed something like 10 times in the last six months. I was robbed twice in quick succession about 7 years ago and never again since taking some relatively simple security measures. My next door neighbour has never been robbed. Is my neighbour 3 houses down just really unlucky or what?

No offense, but some people seem to be natural victims.

Errr, stating the obvious? Logic tells me that the more you earn the more stuff you have to steal?!

A household earning below R8k , what exactly are going to steal? The food?

Let me elaborate on the crimes so I can nip this line of interrogation against me in the butt.

First crime, break in while we were on holiday - poisoned the dogs and came in through the roof.
Second, car jacking.
Third, Armed robbery inside a Spar.
Fourth, Armed robbery while we were Barbecuing with friends.
Fifth, armed robbery while at restaurant in Bryanston.
And lastly, we were car jacked while fishing in Hartebeespoort.

You must have a bullsye painted on your back.:D

You are only taxed for the difference above R40 000 effectively. There are rebates ect that needs to be included.
Don't know current rates ect, but the tax calculation above does not make sense.

Fair enough - I was working on the 18% of each R1 below R100 000, rounded to 20% because I am a lazy calculator ( :D ), but forgot the rebates.

Nonetheless, adding R1600 to the monthly budget does not a whole lot of beans make anyways. I did not include clothing, schooling etc in the calcs. I feel the point is still made - R8001+ is by no means "not poor".

I'd tend to think that if your household income is less than 8k/month you pretty much don't *have* anything to steal...

I'd also think that there's some "middle ground" where you have enough money for Shiny Stuff (TM) but not enough money for high walls, electric fences, and armed response.

But in the end the criminals don't check your bank account before hitting, they hit where there's the best Return On Investment (it's a business after all) and that would be where there's something of value without the risk of getting caught or shot on sight.
