I agree - everyone has a role to play in education - but holding school boards made up of parents responsible for what is essentially the performance of the teachers and paid professionals (and implicitly the DOE) is simply not the way to go about it. While school boards are partly responsible for the running of the school they often have very few resources to allocate.
 
But dont the school board decide how the schools should be run? Should the people who decide how the school should be run not be held responsible by some means?

And from what I heard on the radio you get sent letters about under performance... um whats bad about that?
 
This is the reason you should make every effort to send your kids to a private school where the principle and teachers are ultimately answerable to the governing body of the school. (ie the parents)
You also don't have interference from dumb@ss government officials who don't know what they're talking about as well as the added bonus of the school only hiring top staff.

And if your kids have all this and they're still not performing, who are you going to blame then ? You can have the best teachers, but if your kids aren't doing their bit . . . well. :rolleyes:

I agree with you 100% there. What you will find though is that discipline is so much better at private schools. I know my kids are way better off since moving them.

Granted there are your isolated cases of indiscipline splashed all over the media, but in general you couldn't even compare behaviour at public schools with that at private.

My kids are at "public schools". The discipline is great. The staff have great support from the parent body (note, not governing body). The team work is great, which is as it should be.

I suggest that you do some comparisons before making rash statements.

Sure, there are many schools where there are huge problems, but there are also many public schools that are fantastic.

I hear that Maritzburg College has discipline problems at the mo!

I also don't agree with your "isolated cases of indiscipline".Only some are reported. The rest get swept under the proverbial rug.
 
Education comes down to the parents, and social values. And, please note, I am not commending the government for their stupid comments and decisions.
I am talking about the parent of the individual kid.

At private schools, the majority of kids are from a home where education and "drive" are high on the agenda. Otherwise, the parents would not be forking out the money for a private school. In this environment, you will find educated parents who will teach their kids things (be it PC related, how to read the stock market report, that "Heidi" is a great book, etc etc etc).

At the majority of the schools where learning is a non-event and failure high, the home structure is not one of learning (be it because of an illiterate parent, a parent of poor standing or a case of parents never being at home).
In the last case, the guardian is at fault (if there is one) or the social fabric of society - but not the school.

Education, she begins at the home.
 
Well the education department has failed miserably, it is not the responsibility as such of the parents to ensure a good education, but at least they will have official capacity to do something about the problem now. Passing the problem along, is shameful though.
