Banker wins a million...twice

A bank employee won R1-million for helping to protect the bank against crime - for the second time.

Moses Subjee, an off-line equipment operator at First National Bank (FNB) in Johannesburg, could not believe his luck when FNB CEO Michael Jordaan presented him with the Vow of Vigilance award, said FNB spokesperson Sue Naidoo in a statement on Wednesday.

He also won R1-million in the award in 2002.

"Winning a million for the second time in a lifetime? That's beyond anybody's wildest dreams," said Subjee.

Subjee's winning entry - an altered cheque he intercepted - was one of 45 incidents of attempted fraud he spotted, out of more than 2 000 entries.


"His continued dedication in reporting incidents of crime and doing such an exemplary job in protecting the bank's best interests is exactly what we had hoped to entrench by initiating this campaign," said Jordaan.

Head of prevention at group forensic services, Edward Blight, said the campaign had saved the FirstRand banking group almost R12-billion, well worth the investment in prize money. - Sapa

Great story. You wouldn't catch m eworking at the same job five years after I'd won a million rand, though. :)
 
It is a great story... This is a really good program at FNB.

This guy alone picked up 45 incidents of attempted fraud - wow!

Unfortunately a million doesn't take you very far. You'll need a bit more to actually retire.
 
Nah, I'm not talking about retiring - I'd start my own business with me as boss.

Granted, perhaps his circumstances are different- but I'm just saying.
 
No1 seems to think of the possibility of this guy actually winning, because somehow he, prior to "spotting" the fraudulant transactions, KNEW about them, as in a SET UP to assure himself winning the 1 mil ????

yeeeea.. come on this is SA remember!

cynicism aside, there were over 2000 entries of which 45 were his, so he only stood 2% chance of winning. If he was crooked, wouldn't it be better to take a cut of the fraudulent transactions?
 
I would definately work there.. if the dude has won twice, then there is a GOOD chance he will win again. MAYBE not tho' they might feel thrice is too much. but the dude abviously knows what he is doing!!

there were 200 entries but his stats of 45 were probably the highest. The others were prob employee who had each spotted five of ten or so. his 45 was prob teh highest!! if he does it again and gets another million, it might incentivise others to try even harder!
 
Nope because then HE stands a chance of being caught, this way, he gets to be a hero instead. Anyway, we will never really know will we :p
 
Must be fun working there thinking that every fraudulent transaction you find can make you a mill!!

I don't think you understand the point. there is very little incentive to identify fraudulent transactions that he was involved with. Considering that these transactions always point to some account that will allow for police investigation.

awtron is just being cynical and negative.
