Pretoria - Reducing the number of provinces from nine to four lines up with the African National Congress's attempts to centralise government, and is therefore no surprise, the African Christian Democratic Party said on Tuesday.

"Efforts to make democracy easier or cheaper are ridiculous and defeat the object and we question whether the cost of democracy will now be tallied on all fronts," said ACDP member of parliament Cheryllyn Dudley.

Why did they change it to 9 provinces in the first place ? So no chance of the DA getting a second term in Cape Town

They changed it to 9 when they thought it would sway things in their favour, they are just doing the same thing, as they are now starting to get opposition, plus they'll be working with bigger budgets as well.
 
Four provinces would mean a lot fewer senior local government positions would be available, which hopefully would go to the more competent people. It might actually be beneficial.

That cuts both ways.
Since the people in power can barely manage to get anything done now, what will they do when their workload doubles?

Delegate the work, or try to handle everything, and end up doing nothing (like now :D ).
 
Only good thing that can come out of this is less "commrades" in government and more in the private sector getting BEE contracts :rolleyes:

Either way corruption wins :D

Cape Town is not a province.
Its not hard to unnerstand: 3 levels of government: National, Provincial and Local. This plan involves the Provincial governments- all of which are ANC anyway.

Cape Town is a Local government, the Western Cape Provincial government is ANC.

@Nod, the ANC are not starting to get opposition. The DA has led Cape Town before, the IFP has led KZN before.

Whether this whole thing is a good idea or not, is another question. But lets not confuse the issue.

This layering of control is interesting. The people vote for local government in Cape Town. Then when the ANC don't like it, National government gets the provincial ANC people to harass the DA and hamper their ability to govern.
So what is the point in voting local??
 
I'm sorry but I don't get how this is any way different from the old government. i.e. the fact that the ANC wants to centralise government.

Can someone please explain the difference ... you can leave out the whole black/white/apartheid thing ... that I do get.
 
Most Marxist-communist regimes have centralised power. Without it you cannot have a successful Zimbabwe-style dictatorship.

With a de-centralized government it is also difficult to have a coup de'ta. The ANC should think twice before centralizing it.
