The huge amounts of conflicting information around about the next gen consoles is confusing the hell out of me  I am stuck in indecision land and if i dont make a choice pretty soon my wife will change her mind and insist that we spend money on Jimmy Choo's instead so maybe you guys can help me out.

If you had a choice of a PS3 or Xbox 360 both at basically the same price what would you choose. I am due for a cellphone contract upgrade and would be able to get one or the other with a negligble financial impact in the choice.

Bear in mind that I have a 1080p LCD HDTV (or will in the near future) and would like to enjoy HD quality movies as well. I have a dream of watching BBC's Planet Earth in Hi Def :)

I also have a PS2 at the moment and its a nice to have to be able to play my old PS2 games.

At the moment I am leaning towards the PS3 but i also dont want to end up with a unsupported piece of kit if the PS3 goes the same way as Sega..

Finally in everyones opinion is there space in the market for both consoles to viably exist and for developers to produce good quality games for both or is the market too small.

Opinions gratefully appreciated ..

In order of best purchase to worst:

1) 360
2) Wii
3) Jimmy Choo shoes
4) PSTriple

The PS Triple aint got no games.

Dude, think of how happy your missus with be with a new pair of Jimmy Choos. You'd get more fun out of her "thank you" than you would outta the whole PS3 games catalogue.

Opinions gratefully given :D

Get the xbox 360 now, it has by far the most games available and it's online ability is amazing...

The PS3 will have to drop in price later this year and you are going to be ticked that you over paid for something then.

The idea of watching Blu-Ray movies however is appealing, is it worth R6300 to watch HD movies and not have many games though?

The PS3 is sadly lacking in games at the moment.

If you can, get both if you can't then get the Xbox 360. You already have the PS2 to play PS2 games on ;)

If you can get a Wii, get that, otherwise, get the 360. The PS3 seems to be dying a pretty rapid death

I also only have a ps2 but my bro has Xbox
It is great graphics good games !!!
How ever if price does nto come into play come on.

PS3 !!! Bigger memory space, blue ray (whatch the dvd's when they come out in it) Play or old games (very important)

and there is no lag on the wireless controls with the ps 3 not forgetting the nice remote one can buy for ps 3 .

Is there space for both? you are trying to dicide yourself which one to buy so yes and remember no one can have the manopoly.

The games... no there should be one set of games what is the use I see great game "A" and cant play it cuz it is only on x box

There's no lag on the 360 controllers. wtf you talking about? Also, you can get a 360 remote too.

I have just come back from watching a PS3 in action on a nice massive HD LCD Screen. It's awesome!!!

Dont listen to fan boi's when making your decision. Look at what games are on offer for each console, decide what you like best. Then make your choice.

The only reason why people buy the Xbox ahead of the PS3 is because of price. If you read a recent NAG mag, those that reviewed the consoles would have opted for the PS3 had price not come into the decision.

Syzygy

Ummm, actually it's because the 360 has more, and better, games.

Point. I wonder if I would be able to get away with something from Truworths... :D

Seriously though thanks to all for the advice... If the PS3 does drop in price could we expect a significant drop or are we talking a few hundred bucks?

I have got to say that this is one of the harder purchasing decisions I have had to make in a while. Buying my car was easier dammit..!

Not my opinion, FACT. PSTriple hasn't got a game the calibur of Gears of War or GH2 at this point.

Jeez, somewhere along the line I've become a rabid 360 fanboi.

Omelette, Truworths aint gonna cut it my friend.

If you're looking for a games console, I'll echo BluCollar, he's spot on the money. The 360 is hands down the best option for HD and online gaming, it's got the best selection of current and future content, will make your HD TV sing, and will always be a year ahead of the PS3 in terms of content delivery.

The Wii is not HD as is currently not available in South Africa, it's fun for family / party games, but has no online as of yet.

Technically the PS3 and 360 are comparable, but the PS3 has a huge issue with content at the moment. It doesn't have any. (okay 2 exclusive mediocre games). There are a number of cross platform games, but that's the catch. Practically all cross platform games look and perform better on the 360 - it was out first and is much easier to develop for, and as such is the de facto standard (In the west at least). Oh, and your Ps2 games are not guaranteed to run on a PS3.

The kicker for you is going to be the movies. Do you buy more movies, or play more games? Few HD movies are readily rentable, so you'll have to buy all your movies, and you're talking R300 a pop for BR movies. Would you rather spend R300 on a movie you watch once or twice, or R400-500 on a great game you'll be playing for months? And as I always say, HD doesn't make a bad movie any better . . .

If you want to go 360 there's is also the HD-DVD add-on which is about R2000 imported, but there's the same issue with the price and availability of the movies.

And here's a future note to consider - if you're looking at HD content, although not offered here yet, the Xbox offers HD movie rentals (720p) straight over the internet, and what is confirmed is that the 360 will support SD & HD Microsoft IPTV (TV over the internet) which is confirmed as the platform for Telkoms IPTV roll out next year.

EDIT: jeepers I took so long to type that I missed the good bits ;)

If the Missus is an issue, 360 comes in as the winner with a bullet:
Xbox live Arcade - without a doubt the best casual games platform out there. My wife is not a gamer, but I've spent more on Arcade games for the wife then I have on retail games!

Platformers, Card games, Puzzle games, classics, there's something like over 60 titles now.

retail "family" games I've played with my wife:
Kameo
Viva Pinata
Lego star Wars
Guitar Hero

Here's perspective - my Wifes gamescore broke 2000 before I did . .

And on the PS3 there's . . . none. niks. nada.

There are some well reasoned arguments for going with the Xbox 360 coming through here...

A question on content for the Xbox and PS3. At the moment Xbox seems to have a wider selection of games and games that are more appealing to me (Gears of War etc..).

However is it at all likely that PS3 will catch up and what about traditional PS3 exclusives like Gran Turismo, Grand Theft Auto and of course God of War. Will these be availble on both consoles or will I have to forgo my Kratos fix..

As Doobiwan said the HD movie issue is not helping the situation any but I suppose that the HDTV playing DVD's with progressive scan will still be awesome :(
