What is the symptoms of an capped ADSL account?

Because the one client of mine authenticates successfully, the statistics page on the router shows connected, it gets allocated a public IP addy...

...but when you try to ping mweb, telkom, theregister it returns a timeout.

I dialled in via dial-up modem, and tried to ping the public IP allocated to the router, but was unable to get a route to said IP.

Via dial-up I was able to access myadsl, skype, google etc...

Or is it a setup on the router that needs to be tweaked? (router was resetted to factory defaults...) - I doubt that it is the case as it authenticates successfully and you get a public IP.

Depends on which ISP u talking about.

IS based accounts cant even authenticate i think.
I used webafrica and once thats capped u cant ping nothing, u do get a public IP but u can only access the webafrica site

And telkom u can access telkomsa site...
and if none work then probably telkom's line fault :p

isn't in the mood for telkom and their capping junk at the moment, had a horrible morning battling to get a firewall up and running - in the end the motherboard was on its last legs... and when I put the router back, no Internet, nothing. :(

Cannot ping, but, for example when I ping www.mweb.co.za it resolves to the correct IP for mweb, but times out. Same for theregister.co.uk, resolves correctly so DNS queries is still passing through, but pings, ftp, web etc just fails...

dang hardcap... hope infraco and neotel gives telkom big big BIG nightmares! :mad:

Resolving a DNS name does not necessarily prove anything. The client computer could have cached the name, or a local box like a smoothwall could provide it.

In my 2 days of ADSL experience I have obviously not hit a cap, but what I've found is there seems to be no way of distinguishing a failure to access your ISP's authentication servers (if they are down for example) from a failure to authenticate (because you're capped or not yet activated).

You can prove the Telkom DSL is working if you set revert to user:guest@telkomadsl password:guest, connect, and try to ping www.telkom.co.za (and it works).

Otherwise ... you have to login to your ISP via some other connection and see what their usage stats say. Assuming they provide usage stats.
 
How much of the cap has been used?
 
@ bwana - we have no idea - client is a PC repair shop, doing virus scans, virus updates, windows updates etc etc from the Net, so they might have gobbled it all up...

@ Secretcode - will try the guest@telkomadsl login and see if it works - if it does, then they're capped. If not, then there's some other problems... btw, they don't have a DNS server on their network at all, I tried installing Smoothwall for them yesterday, but the motherboard was one mean mofo... thanks for the tip tho... :D
 
I'm on SAOL and once the cap is reached I can only access SAOL.com nothing else :o

The "degu" in the smoothwall beta release "3.0-degu" is from one of the developers' pets that died during development. In case you were wondering.
