African Parliament blames West for environmental problems

Deputies and experts attending the Pan African Parliament on Monday called for Western countries to help reverse the environmental damage to the continent that they had helped create.

"This problem is generated by countries in the West," said the African Union Commission's rural development and agriculture commission director Babagana Ahmadu.

"We are asking the Western nations to help us tackle the impact of this problem," he added.

Ahmadu was presenting a report on the issue to the Pan African Parliament (PAP) in Midrand, South Africa.

Climate change and waste-dumping had had "devastating consequences" on food security and health, he told reporters.

"It is beyond our means to address this problem in Africa because we lack the technology and the financial capability."

Climate change affected water resources, agriculture, health, ecosystems and biodiversity, forestry and coastal zones, he said. The continent was particularly vulnerable because of its dependence on rain-fed agriculture.

Debating the report, parliamentarians said the West should pay reparations.

"There should be compensation for Africa like Israel [received] from Germany after World War II," Egyptian MP Mohammed Abdulaziz said.

"PAP should ask for compensation from Western countries over greenhouse effects and hazardous waste dumping."

Sudanese parliamentarian Suad El Fateh El Badaoui argued: "Our Parliament should look seriously into the dumping of waste on the continent.

"This destruction of our environment is done by foreigners, especially from the West, assisted by selfish Africans," he added.

Ahmadu said 50 000 metric tonnes of waste was stored on the continent.

Nwancha Okioma, a rapporteur of a PAP mission to the Côte d'Ivoire, raised the issue of the Russian ship -- registered in Panama -- which last August offloaded 525 metric tonnes of highly toxic liquid waste in the port of Abidjan.

The Ivorian authorities say the resulting pollution killed at least 15 people and led to 107 000 being hospitalised. -- AFP

Of course the West is to blame. They emit a vast majority of the entire worlds greenhouse gases.
As for the USA still not joing the Kyotoa Protocol...
 
If you don't want a country dumping pullutants on your soil, don't allow them. As far as global warming goes, it is affecting the whole world, I have my doubts if it is indeed caused by pollution, even if it is, I see the African leaders as the 'selfish Africans', wanting a hand-out to put in their own pockets.

I have seen lately that the west has a '/care' attitude these days towards Africa, when was the last time that the West actually listened to Africa's entitlement speeches?

Africa, help yourself, if you don't take responsibility for yourself, you are not worthy of Western help anyway, as it would be money thrown in the sea.
 
Climate change is due to climates, which change. Whole geographical areas experience it, the Sahara became a desert, in the future, it could be a rain forest. The effects of pollution, is over rated. Which is of concern is when is does affect people directly, who are exposed to it.

Is NEW Zealand East or West ?? Very close to Japan but Japan is East so I suppose it's also East...

Anyway, they are to blame for all the farting sheep depleting our OZONE.
 
I have had dogs who are more responsible, with regards to protecting their loves ones and not making a mess, where I don't want it, than the African countries.

Most of the West does not even know where we are, what we do and that we are this pathetic. Africa should start to realise that they are not the centre of the world.

Africa should learn to pull itself up by its own bootstraps. African countries should trade with each other, build themselves. The lack of leadership is africa is the problem...

Assho... err I mean president Mbeki today said we should just learn to live with zimbabweans streaming into the country, and that dialog is taking place between the zanu'pf and mdc. WTF is that gonna do to help the economic situation is zimbabwe?

I'm not denying that global warming is happening, I just don't think it has much to do with pollution, just the effect of natural climate change.

What utter rubbish. There is overwhelming evidence to suggest that global warming is as a direct result of human activity.
