Sony's video game division suffered an operating loss of 232.3 billion yen for the full-year, compared with a profit of 8.7 billion a year earlier.

Sony -- which under its first foreign head Howard Stringer has announced plans to axe 10,000 jobs -- poured hundreds of millions of dollars into the PlayStation 3 and its success is considered vital to the company's future.

The company was forced to delay the global launch of the PS3 by six months until last November and pushed back the rollout again in Europe, Russia, the Middle East, Africa and Australasia until March.

The PS3 is facing intense competition from Nintendo's Wii and Microsoft Xbox 360, and Sony was forced to slash the launch price in Japan amid complaints it was too expensive, making it harder to recoup the huge investments.

Seems like Sony is having a tough time. But I still hope they dont go the same way as Sega, competition is always good.

Let them get a taste of reality amongst all the arrogance they are rife with. Once they know how to please their loyal customers maybe they will be a tad more clever in their approach to satisfy gamers.

After owning a PS1 and a PS2, and then seeing an XBOX at 1/2 the price than the PS3 with better support and more active marketing (and without the Sony Attitude(tm) ), I will not get a PS3.

Sure, I am but one person, with hardly an interest in gaming at all, but so be it.
:p

Gavin Mannion is slow today ;).

I am truly offended...
I posted this story 2 days ago (Sony's huge loss)
http://www.lazygamer.co.za/ps3/bad-day-for-sony/

I then followed it up yesterday with the Japanese sales data
http://www.lazygamer.co.za/xbox-360/sonys-woes-continue/

And not to be left out I posted the US Sales data this morning (PS3 gets hammered again)
http://www.lazygamer.co.za/xbox-360/aprils-us-sales-data-ps3-still-trailing/

Obviously you are not one of my loyal visitors :(

Now if Sony could only improve their PS3 emulation to actually increase the game's visual qualities then I wouldnt have a problem. Currently PS2 games look like cr@p on a PS3 while X360 BC works wonders and has me reloading old Xbox classics for the fun of it.

It's may end up like the game boy advance, it's cheap as chips, so even nongamers like grannies buy them as gifts to shut up the whelps ;)
