Windows Vista Aero Vs Linux Ubuntu Beryl

I got beryl running in Ubuntu on my spare PC. Runs very well. PC is a P4 3.4, geforce 66000LE and 1GB DDR 533. I turned some of the effects off as they get a bit annoying, but it is really cool. You should look on youtube for a guy that set up a matrix theme with beryl, really cool. Dont have a link but its not hard to find.

Wish someone can make a beryl clone for windows :D

Come on linux developers, write some beter support for games and me can also join you :o

With Beryl loaded on my FC6 box, I was able to play FM2007 through wine, play music via Amarok and have my TV Card playing as well. I had the other windows transparent so I could see what was playing on the TV. All of this took up about 700MB of RAM. When Beryl is running with nothing else happening there is hardly any system resource usage.

EDIT: To be a pedant, its just Beryl and works across most if not all Linux distros. Think of it the way OpenOffice is not limited to any one OS.

I'm running Linux (Ubuntu 7.04) on my notebook with Beryl running, runs very well. It eats a bit of CPU when you spin the 3D cube but the normal usage is quite low.

Notebook is a 1.8ghz AMD Turion 64, 1gb ram, Radeon X700 64mb VRAM.

It beats the crap out of Vista's Aero.
 
Does beryl ship with ubuntu or is it a separate install? I haven't installed feisty yet, will do so in june.
 
WOW!!!

I'm a Vista fan and I like gaming, but WOW...That Beryl looks amazing!!!

Think I'm gonna do a dual boot :D
 
Nope, but it does come with Compiz which is what Beryl is based/forked on/from. Compiz will give you shadows under windows, 3D desktop cube thing, Beryl has more features, though.

Thanks, I saw I could enable some desktop features after live booting but it complained about lacking a video driver...which it couldn't install due to running live. So I guess that's compiz. Can't wait to see how my integrated 6100 handles it compared to aero...and I'll install Beryl in june anyways (will have an 8800GTS by then :P)

May microsoft tremble in fear :D
 
I run Beryl, and that and amarok are the two biggest reasons you should switch operating systems.

Kubuntu ftw! (that looked like a KDE Kubuntu desktop) (though it might just be the wallpaper) :)

I'm very eager to re-install Kubuntu again, but the problem i had to start off with was setting up my multimonitor to work. I think if i can get some real help with setting up and using Kubuntu and how it all works, file formats etc, then i'll try beryl...
 
Hope you don't have an ATI card :)
