De Lille urges crackdown on Internet blogs

ID leader Patricia de Lille has called on government to crackdown and regulate internet blog sites and also the popular Mxit text message service.

De Lille has also indicated the ID will ask the National Intelligence Agency to try to track down the author of defamatory statements made about the ID's Simon Grindrod on an internet blog.

"Another worrying development in cyberspace is the abuse of blogging, which allows anonymous individuals to post defamatory comments about anyone they choose, without the legal consequences they would face in other more reputable print and electronic media," said De Lille in a statement.

I think the Southafricasucks blog needs to be shut down yesterday. Another one is the africancrisis website. Anyone agrees?

I am sure there is nothing the government would like more than to deploy a system like China. Luckily for them, telkom is doing a much more effective job of ensuring that we don't have access to info.

Yep, and freedom of speach, and the right to voice your opinion about anybody or anything, as long as it doesnt engender or promote hate, bigotry or prejudice.
So as the article says , making derogatory comment about people, is voicing an opinion, and the fact that people may agree, they are voicing there opinions.

As Bullard and now De Lille have said, the concerning thing about blogging is that the "victims" of these remarks have anyone to take action against should they feel those remarks are defamatory. I have no beef with blogging, it should just be made transparent and the bloggers should have to answer for what they inflict on other people.

I agree that the site is certainly not constructive in the grand scheme of things but is that reason enough to regulate/censor it, I think not.
Why don't government, political and other interested parties rather engage the people that run these sites rather than going all gestapo on their asses?


Censorship in any form is bad, and DeLille has been smoking her undies. (am I allowed to say that or will it be banned to?)

Does DeLille / ID support the amendment to the Film and Publications act that the ANC so keenly want to push through?
From this article it looks like it.

DeLille <-- well that's funny coming from her .. the same woman who not too long ago published a book mentioning names of woman without their consent. A large percentage of her profits went to them by court case.

Smells like an attempt to 'justify' a whole lot of 'projected guilt' ;)

Banning, censorship. What's next? Imprisonment without trial, shootings and disappearances? Oh but don't we have 'some' of that already if somebody expresses a political opinion or view? Has anything really changed or have the colours simply done a blackflip and we're back where we started?

Yes, invoking aparthate clauses against freedom of the press. Yes, invoking colour based legislation at overall expense to the country. Yes, ignoring any pleas against crime (or for 13 years) AIDS, or enforcing cartels at the expense of the people.

Yes it seems the same regime (and anybody who says any different or has an opinion should STFU or bear the consequences!)

Sickening. What have [-]we[/-] they come to? And what is the future? Bob? Seems so if it continues. So those on this thread catch a wakeup: it's called freedom, something all of us were supposed to have signed up to, and something that seems slowly to be evaporating in this government of appeasement to bob (a despot) and their refusal to see any light of day (best expressed by the attitude of De Lille: somebody who should know better!)

Hey dude, I was just saying there is no accountability, something I want to see in all spheres of our society. Even on this forum, where we don't know each others identity, however we have a way of taking action if someone writes something we feel is offensive.

That is where I feel Blogging does not comply. If a newspaper or TV channel was to print/broadcast some of the stuff there, some people would be sitting with heavy defamation cases on their hands. If Bloggers want to share their opinion, then must be held accountable for what they say.

Yes accountability is required. Freedom of speech has to have boundaries and rules. Otherwise it gets taken advantage of by scumbags. We have people who truly believe that theirs is a superiour (race/relion/language etc etc). Such opinions only serve to enforce evil intentions and cannot be allowed to be aired.

Are you talking about hate speech and incitement to violence, cause those are already covered.
 
The test of whether a statement is defamatory is whether there has been real damage to the reputation. There is a difference between defamation and “meaningless abuse”, which is not defamatory because it doesn’t lower the estimation of the recipient in the eyes of society. Our courts have held that calling someone a “low-life fellow” or a “cheap cow” or a “miserable cad” is not defamatory.
