BEIJING, China (Reuters) -- China plans to launch a lunar orbiter in the second half of 2007, in a first step towards a lunar probe, Xinhua news agency quoted the director of the National Space Administration as saying on Sunday.

If the Chang'e I orbiter succeeds in orbiting the moon, the next step would be an attempt to land. Ultimately a moon rover would collect samples before returning to earth, Sun Laiyan said in a speech at Beijing Jiaotong University.

A big step up for the Chinese but on the other hand NASA is buying russian rocket engines because they don't have the expertise anymore to build efficent booster engines anymore.

Rather telling.

Could be that they're buying them cause the russian ones are cheaper and more reliable? :D
 
Whats this I read here?How did the get their things right back in the late sixties?over forty years ago.

Strictly speaking we should be calling them "Cosmonauts", since the Russkiis were the first with a satellite, first animal, first man, first woman, first unmanned probe to the moon etc..

The Chinese are using a modifed version of the Russian Soyuz capsule. The general design has changed very little in fact.
