Ok so i have a P4 3Ghz EMT64, LGA775. at the moment, the idle temp of the CPU is above 70 degrees, open up a few firefox windows and it jumps to around 75 degrees and the CPU load spikes to around 70%-100%. My fan sounds like a friggin truck and its bugging the hell out of me.

Would it help by getting a new fan or is there something wrong with the CPU itself? i remember the days when my CPU used to cruise along at 55-60 degrees with my fan sounding like a nice C class Merc :(

Please help guys!!

I would suggest you get some nice thermal paste and a new cpu fan/heatsink. They aren't that expensive

oh man, 70C??? that's crazy. You might need to play doctor doctor, get some thermal paste in there and maybe a newer heatsink and fan. The problem with the older CPU's is they run hot. I had that problem. I got an AMD AM2 processor and it doesn't touch 20C now. There are ample coolers out there right now, just depends on how much you want to spend. Remember all the other stuff in the case affects it to. Maybe you need a case fan or 2 if you don't already. just my opinion.

How long ago did you clean out the dust between your CPU FAN and Heatsink?

whats a nice fan to get? something with sufficient cooling as well as low noise?

I had a 3ghz and had the same temps as you. IIRC I got as high 80C. Tried everything to fix it including paste, cooler and case and nothing worked.

Chucking it out was the best solution

Get a midrange Core 2 Duo ... much cooler and will slap your 3Ghz P4 silly.

hehehe, schweet! i reason for me to get a new cpu :D been waiting for one for ages

haha Prankst3r, I want to know how do you go from having overheating problems to being interested in a Q6600. Look at this bad boy -> Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme Edition QX6800 -> http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-148-IN

"The performance? It eats benchmarks for breakfast" OMF!!

lol Xcalibre, the reason is simple: I'm bored ****less at work, trying to find a good reason to upgrade my current rig whilst, at the same time, trying to make myself happy thinking i could afford one of these babies. :D

but anyways, back to reality now. Those arctic coolers look like a good buy. Are there any stockists in SA?
