The drug traffickers keep a close eye on the area from the public gym on a hill, near a park surrounding a church.

The heavily-armed gang retreated to the top of the favela, using guerrilla tactics to counter the police invasion.

'Don't stop walking'

Gang members have poured oil on the streets to stop police cars, especially armoured vehicles, from driving into the area. They have also built cement barricades and removed manholes to make parts of the slum inaccessible by car.

Since the siege began, shootouts, some lasting as long as 11 hours, have sown fear in the area.

That is just weird, now we have seriously bad crime but I don't think there is anywhere in the country where anything like that is going on...

If they know where this heavily armed gang is why don't they send in the army? I mean these guys don't even sound like they are really hiding...

Very strange indeed...

Shh!! Don't say anything good about this country. You'll get attacked from every angle by angry ex South africans.:D :D

lol sorry did I say something good about SA?

You notice how the threads which have something negative to say about SA are booming and this little thread gets nothing?

I think it's a cool story, could you imagine actually living like that?

Gun wielding madmen. Never had a desire to go to south america and this just comfirms it, I mean c'mon flesh eating fish, strange tropical disease and san paolo which is the capital of the transgendered population of the world.

I tell you, its something in the water, or maybe that white powder they are all so passionate about

I've always wanted to go to Rio, I must just remember to stay in the nice parts when I go...

Wouldn't want to get caught in the middle of that

Underdeveloped countries = violence.

Sounds pretty harsh. Real warzone style, and it's actually pretty amazing that the cops have held on for this long. Some dedication there. Just incredible that criminals can turn a city area into their own pricate little kingdom, though.

It's hard to fight a guerilla war in a city environment. Just ask the British and the Iraq-stationed US marines. Must be even harder in a slum. At least it doesn't say anything about either side using explosives yet.

Watch City of God, based on actual events. Brilliant movie. Gritty and real, the "actors" were taken off the streets.

...not forgeting the RIO carnival...

As carnivals go, I would prefer the new orleans mardi gras, but hell I have never been to any of them, but you know its a toss-up actually. Rio carnival = flesh eating fish, new orleans mardi gras = americans...its a tough one

City of God was fscked up...

Gavin: that gym is someone's property and livelihood.
