It's an excellent console. But really, until some games come out, it's just a blue ray player.
Can't help but get the feeling that if Sony could have a redo, the PS3 would be a very different machine, no expensive BLue Ray player, more conventional architecture, come out a year earlier and cost $150 less. It would then be kicking the 360s ass and have had a nice dominant position before the WII arrived. They screwed up big time, but then iut's easy to say with hindsight.

um... the thing is, that with the blu-ray, the extra data space is actually suitable for the high def. games, there's a game that is 18gigs in total which means the xbox's dvd will be lacking

The BlueRay is very nice. Just that it pushes the price up a whole wack. So would you rather have a PS3 with BlueRay as is now or one without that costs the same as an XBox? For R3.5k without BlueRay, I'd be off to the shops right now. MS got that right with their DVD. Few people care that much about BlueRay or HDDVD or whatever format. I want a console to play games first and foremost. Hell, I'd fork out extra cash for DivX compatability long before BlueRay or HDDVD. And if BlueRay becomes significant, there will be an external player for the XBox.

with the price tag sony ps3 has currently it will NEVER be a good console. way to pricey for something the xbox can do at half the price.
I agree with GougedEye. BlueRay is nice, but not nice enough to pay an extra three grand on a machine that fails in every other department.

Well, as long as sales stay as crappy as they are at the moment, no big software house will consider making a lot of PS3 exclusive games. Besides, coding for the 360 is 10 times easier and you can almost directly port the games to the PC if done right.

By leverage i meant the "no Games" issue is flogged repetitively as you predictably did with this stunner --> "Oh and not having games for a gaming console is a teensy weensy bit of an issue"
I sometimes think ppl bashing the PS3 do actually win something mind you. The quality of the PS3 and its potential has actually matched if not exceeded my expectations. You mention how the x360 is outselling the PS3 but there is such a thing as price (ala why more Toyota Corollas are sold than Ferrari 599's)... also y the PS2 is still going strong, its cheap; no getting away from that. People seem to isolate the price factor btwn the two consoles. Also bear in mind the X360 has already had 2 Xmas seasons.
Ofcourse i care abt games but there is already a wide variety of titles and more on the way, thats how new products work; dont be a lemon. I have 3 BD movies and 4 PS3 titles atm. I'm ok.
Blu-ray is a great technology period but it is an ADDITIONAL feature to the PS3's suite. Great that ppl are enjoying the BD features of the PS3 @ the moment; good 4 them ... y they bought the console is their prerogative.
Besides, it early doors yet ... i am content & look forward to MGS4 someday ;)

The "no games" issue Retro isn't just about being able to rattle off a list of games. Firstly, not all games appeal to all people, secondly, most of those games are second rate ports of 360 titles, which thirdly, as new, are more expensive on the PS3, and some even lack online options already available. Fourthly nothing on the PS3 really stands out, let alone being "killer apps". Motorstorm, is just dusty Burnout (got) and Resistance is just a shooter, which well, we know the 360's rep. Which leaves? "flow", I think . . .
If you don't own a console and are looking at which to buy based on the games available, or you have both consoles and need to decide which platform to play your cross platform titles, the 360 wins hands down in both cases.
to the PS3's 50, there are already 200 games available on the 360, but more importantly look the new release schedule. How many PS3 releases are there this week? Last Week? How about the whole of April? This week we're in the middle of the traditional spring "drought" and the 360 has 2 AAA's and a B rate title, not to mention 6-8 arcade titles. The PS3 has, uh, none.
Right now? You're buying a Blu-ray player that, provided you don't have the better alternative, can sort of play games.
You don't even have to believe me. All you need to do is look at the figures. In Japan the 360 Software outsold the PS3 last week, IN JAPAN! Meanwhile in the US 360 software is outselling the PS2. Just think about that.
And @tan - Toyota makes a heck of a lot more money, doesn't have to be floated by other company divisions, and people get a lot more bang for their buck in a Toyota. The folks buying the ferrari's are the one's with more money than sense.

oh dear obiwan; i was comparing two cars to emphasize price factor importance... not the financial structures of Ferrari or Toyota. Just as i was not comparing MS & Sony. I could used any BMW or Merc etc, its irrelevant. Don't kid urself, Price is very important.
But truly, your post told me nothing new ... it was just a long write-up on the "no game issue" my earlier post referred to . All ur comments are based on the short term; Please re-read my earlier post abt the "no games issue.". I'm in it for the long term and all the benefits asscociated (ie. Blu-Ray; Home; Games etc) ... why people CANNOT ACCEPT this is unsufferable.
The PS3 is a technological investment on my part, i view it more as just a gaming device but that is not an admission its not great gaming wise. I also view the PSP the sameway [although i'll admit i never cared for the PSP games, maybe MGS-PO]
Also u mentioned Motorstorm being dusty burnout, well i could also equate Gears of War as a rich man's "Infernal" ... Nice graphics didnt do much 4 me gameplay wise. I have no qualms with the x360 and it obviously has more games out as its been out longer. Like i said, this thing has been around under a year. Wait till nxt year at this time then i'd listen to all 360fanboy with this "PS3 has no games". Heck, I'd like the PSN tickets/cards today in SA but i'll just have to wait. Thats how it is when new products hit the market.

How many of those are so good they justify spending over R3000 more on a PS3?
If someone who does not have cash cluttering the place, which they were thinking of burning just to get it out of the way, asks which current generation console they should buy there is no question that it has to be the 360. Only a deranged member of the Sony cult would answer otherwise.
There is definitely something wrong with our PS3 pricing. If I am not mistaken it is 50% more expensive in the US, but something like 80% more here.

Ok I appologise for saying you beloved machine has no games. It has a few games, almost all of which are available on the 360 (or PS2 for that matter) with a limited release schedule going forward and rapidly diminishing exclusive list. Happy now?
As to the long term thing? Well it's not selling now and sales are falling. What is going to turn this around? So far it has not proved itself significantly (if at all) superior to the 360. People keep saying how the PS3 is long term, and we need to wait until the developers work out how to make it work. But it doesn't seem that the developers want to. Why invest all that time in making a an exlusive for the PS3 with 3million users when it's quicker and cheaper to make it for the XBox with 10million (Or the WII with 30million?). And due to it's really wierd architecture, ports are quite difficult as well.
The market is voting on the PS3. No matter how much people insist it's great and fantastic and the machine Chuck Norris would choose, the fact is it's not selling. Not even in Japan. Too expensive with little expectation of a price drop in the near future (It costs Sony $1000 to make), a mediocre release schedule, and rapidly losing all the big PS2 exclusives.
Sony need to do something quite dramatic. I think they should drop the BR player to bring the Price down 30-40%. If they do that and get a bunch more (good) exclusives, I'll buy one. I'll buy any console that offers me a decent value and benefit, and I am not restricted to 1.

Tan, if you feel the PS3 is the best thing for you and your money, more power too you, the world takes all sorts, but we're talking about now, not in a years time, not in two years time, for ordinary people with ordinary budgets.
Right now, there is little compelling reason to buy a PS3. There is content to occupy you should you chose to buy one, but simple reason dictates that it is not the platform to chose. From a purely rational perspective, if you had R7000 to spend on a PS3, you can afford a 360 pro bundle (extra controller + game) and 6/7 premium, full priced brand new AAA releases, which, if you're like me will last you well over a year, or a 22" LCD monitor.
Even if you're a Playstation fanboy at heart, that gives you 1 year of killer 360 games to save up for the PS3 again, for when the price drops in a year and there's finally "killer" content for it. And considering MGS4 exclusivity is over bar the shouting, that looks to be a rarer thing.

Here we go again ... still the same things rehashed, still another long write-up on the "no games issue." Honestly, i've said my piece on my earlier posts and there's not much to add. At least u mentioned the PRICE FACTOR; which too me is the real grounds for debate but again is highly opinionated.
I understand some ppl cant afford a console @ that amount However rand for rand, R6299 (got mine @ this price) is a reasonable deal for the technology of the machine period. So if u feel that price is too much for you for what u get that is ur opinion, dont buy it. Its a great product @ a high price unfortunately but what else is new? I'd love a Harmon Kardon home theatre system but it can be really pricey, so i buy alternatives... i dont spend my time trying to convince others not to save for one? (which i don't understand)
For me @ that price for what i'm getting in the PS3 its alright, i am ok. Like i said before, i don't understand why x360 owners can't accept this; simple as that. Spend more time writing abt ur console plz.
MGS4 is a PS3 exclusive, how many times does this have to be quelled? Besides i did not and would not buy a whole console for one game, thats pitiful. The games u mentioned don't interest me @ all i'm afraid.
I didnt spend R6299 on JUST the games coming out this year. I explained it prior... I don't understand this whole pledging of alliegence to either console, i paid the bucks to play games, BDs, PSN, Home etc etc etc etc on THIS PLATFORM.
I care not to add beyond this for as sure as my mornin' coffee i know the same argument is gonna be presented from x360 camp.

As I said Tan, I'm not out to have a go at folks like yourself, you've made your decision, I wish you many happy hours with your device, however you wish to spend them.
I've stopped gunning for the PS3 a long time ago, but people still ask which to buy and I'll happily tell them which I favour, why and will be just as happy to shout down anyone that tries to present garbage as fact.
What I find laughable is that anytime a Sony fanboy loses an argument, it's because everyone else is just a 360 fanboy and just like to hate the PS3. The truth is the facts speak for themselves. At the moment Sony are in a bad place. Some folks look past that and go with the past experience on the PS2 or whatever, as I said that's their choice to make, but dating someone just because their Mom's hot doesn't work for me.
EDIT: Just as a side note I suggest you read the link on MGS4, Destructoid found solid evidence, including legal documents revealing that MGS4 PS3 is only a timed exclusive, and that the 360 and possibly PC version will be out by November next year. The article was such that Konami had them shut down within hours on a public holiday. A modified version is still up, and remember MGS belongs to Konami not Sony, and has appeared on both the Xbox and the Gamecube before.

Gears has much better graphics and so does Forza, PGR, Rainbow 6 blah blah blah..
Also the 40% of it's power thing is utter crap, no one knows how much pwoer the ps3 has. There are strong rumours that it's actually not as powerful as the 360 but again we can't believe anything really.

While we're going to differ on opinions on Motorstorm, I suggest you check out the DiRT demo for the 360, it makes Motorstorm look silly. I'm very interested to see how DiRT PS3 stacks up. It'll be the first game "pushing the bar" releases simultaneously on both machines.
