You can obtain the Sunbelt Personal Firewall for free. On the Sunbelt software
site click TrialPay Checkout then register for a FREE 30 day trial of REALArcade, which you can cancel at any time. The REALArcade Trial
also gives you 2 free games which you can keep if you want, even when
you cancel. You only get billed 10USD per month if you keep REALArcade
going for 30 days.

The Sunbelt Personal Firewall (formerly Kerio Personal Firewall) and previously
Tiny Personal Firewall can also be used in Full working mode as a trial version
for 30 days. However the above method will get you a registration code.

Sounds like too much trouble if you can just simply download alternative free firewalls [which are better] without any 30 days and funny trial "click-arounds" .

Sunbelt is as you mentioned "formerly Kerio" , trouble is, it is STILL Kerio! In other words, they didn't really improve or change the product, they just changed the name.

Just an interesting site to visit [firewalls rated on how well they actually PROTECT]:Sunbelt still scores above ZoneAlarm Free [but below the Pro Edition] .

These review sites are all bull. Why-- because there isn't a central body
of standards properly testing firewalls. It's all a whose-penis-is-bigger debate,
with no-one actually succumbing to a standardised measuring tape anyhow.

Actually Zone Alarm Pro is crap. It's actually a 40USD piece of crap, when it
fails in many leaks tests that OutPost Pro does not:

So while the free version of SPF will cost you $0, the paid version
with added features, which normally costs $20 can also cost you
$0. The added features included Host Intrusion Prevention (DLL injection
attacks and such) and full ad filtering, plus the actual product is TINY
(6 MB download, 17MB memory footprint).

BTW I've been using Kerio for years and never had any problems.
You only download from trusted sites, you scan what you download
otherwise and then Enable K/S PF application behaviour blocking
to prevent stuff from running. Any app which runs will trigger
a warning where you can enable or disable the app, long before
it can hijact Explorer to send stuff out OR disable the firewall.

As for getting $20 worth of stuff for free, well it genuinely works.

All in all, the only real contended for Kerio/Sun-belt IMHO, after 10
years of malware/virus free internet experience (and visiting
sites like astalavista anyhow), is OutPost Pro. ZA is not worth it.

Well "review" sites usually are. They review the "bells and whistles" of firewalls. The site i listed doesn't review, but simply throw a bunch of "attacks" at it and see if it breaks.

Either way, i used Kerio a few years ago, liked it, but was unhappy that the product wasn't being improved or developed further. Then it became Sunbelt and i took a look again, was exact same thing as Kerio [interface and everything] , so i figured i'll wait till sunbelt actually builts it further [and not merely release the same thing] before i look at it again.

As for ZoneAlarm, i never like it , primarily because i never could find a place to view all my active connections [not just 4 or 5 , ALL of them] , how much they are downloading/uploading, from where and actually blocking the -specific connection- . Most firewalls don't even show your active connections, some let you view but don't let you control etc.

Now only firewall [that i played with] that can do all that at this stage, is Agnitum's Outpost, but that ain't free [so yes, if i'm gonna pay for a Fwall i'll get Outpost] . The free one getting 90% there is Comodo , so i went with that.

I tried your Comodo. It gave me 358 high security events within the first
10-15 minutes of operation. As opposed to Kerio/Sunbelt which gives you
a neat clearly written message box, Comodo throws as many as 20 boxes
(1 of 20) at you at the same time. It complained about a virus-free
PGP desktop component called ocmapihk.dll, then when I ran the PCFlankLeakTest it gave the same error box, "Internet Explorer is using
ocmapihk.dll which can be hijacked by keyloggers....blah" no mention
of "PCFlankLeakTest" at all. I even ran the CPILSuite apps from Comodo
to test the firewall, well it gave me the same error message there too,
about ocmapihk.dll. Finally when it did pick up CPILSuite as trying to hijack
Explorer it mentioned that Skype.exe was involved as the 'parent' application,
WTH??? So because of the sheer number of events, so far, I'm not impressed,
among those 350 events only 3-4 were actual demo malware attempts,
and the Flank Test did get through because I allowed the generic error
box which popped up (all 1 of 7 of em).

BTW I have the Notification setting at minimum.

Look just because Kerio/Sunbelt don't jazz up the interface doesn't mean that they are not developing their product. As mentioned before, if you
don't allow malware on your system and if you do allow it, if you prevent its execution
by clicking the DENY button, Kerio/Sunbelt works very well. It doesn't pick
up many hijack attempts of explorer but you have to allow the offending
apps to run by manually clicking ALLOW in K/S PF.

I just configured Comodo correctly and it runs real well for me. thanks for the link.

How you can think that a 30-day trial is getting something for free is quite beyond me. Hordes and hordes of programs have trial periods, but they are in no way free, and 30 days is hardly any kind of useful period.

It's not "my" Comodo, and i'm not saying it's the ultimate firewall either. If you like Kerio/Sunbelt, so be it. I just added my preference, as Sunbelt isn't 100% free and require [as you first post states] additional hoops to jump through , where Comodo doesn't require anything. Alot of people like ZoneAlarm Free for similar reasons.

Yes there's also a fine line between having a "quiet" firewall [aka Windows Firewall] and one that pops up every second. It's up to you to decide what you prefer and which firewall does it best.
