Hi all

I'm trying to diagnose why I am unable to access a site when using Telkom's transparent proxy ...

The forum in question has a ban on the following IPs. The host just will not accept that one of these is very likely a SAIX IP.

Does anyone have the full range of SAIX IPs that I can cross reference against ?

I might be wrong, but it can be that the proxy's IP've been registered as a very naughty IP. (tsk, tsk, naughty spammer...) Not that you're a spammer, somebody might have used to send spam via telkom's proxy...

With Smoothwall you have the ability to download and block IP's via a blacklist table... chances are that this proxy's IP's been blacklisted and blocked this way.

Hope it is this - you can try to use another proxy and see if that helps. If not, blame Telkom and try another ISP...

The site loads when using cache.saix.net 8080 as the proxy server ... but not when using the default SAIX transparent server ...

So either the SAIX transparent server is blacklisted ( which is likely and is what domaintools.com is reporting ) or the transparent proxy is messed up once more.

What I do find strange though is that I can't see a SAIX ip amongst the banned list ?

I honestly don't get this whole banning IP story??

For instance I had an argument with a guy on DOTA which turned pretty ugly basically because he assumed I was cheating which honestly I was not.

Anyway he could identify me by my IP as a nick change didn't help...then tell anyone hosting a game I was cheating and thus be kicked from every game.

No problem, I just reset my PC and dialed in DSL again, he could not tell who I was anymore.

So this IP banning thing doesn't seem to work?!? Unless Im missing something here.

And hth do they manage to blacklist a server?? lol. It's probably the other problem mitch mentioned.

BTW is this whole IP changing thing only in SA??

By spammers sending their nefarious spam from the proxy server instead of their own PC's/IP's...

Yes and no... Most ISP's hand out dynamic IP's to their users. But most don't force the 24 hour reset like Telskum do. I have spoken to ppl who keep the same IP for months on end cause their connection never dies.

I personally think that IP blacklisting is a very good way to deal with problems but it requires two things. Responsible blacklisting policies (with auto de-listing and the like) and fixed IP's - which is never likely to happen with the scarcity of IPv4 address space.

We've had the same IP with iBurst for about 3 months (that's the last time our connection died)
