The e.tv current affairs show '3rd Degree' will air a report called 'Evil Intent' tonight (Tuesday 29 May), which alleges a sadistic streak creeping into modern South African crime.

Cases covered include the story of a man whose ears were cut off before having his cellphone stolen, and of a 68-year-old woman who was tortured to death by having boiling water poured over her.

According to the show, recently released crime statistics show that murders have only dropped by 1.4%, a figure which "does not include the recent crime wave".

"Criminals kill randomly, government remains silent and ordinary people feel trapped in a country where rape and robbery make the daily headlines," screams the teaser.

This week '3rd Degree' looks at the sadistic murder of 68-year-old Sandy Staats. Robbers entered her home in Craighall Park last month, tied her up, blindfolded her and threatened to rape her.

They then poured boiling water over her body until she died.

Her tenant survived the attack and recounts the horrific story in the report.

Experts also offer theories as to why criminal acts are allegedly becoming more and more brutal.

'Evil Intent' airs on e.tv's '3rd Degree' on Tuesday 29 May, at 20h00.

If its possible, the society should be more and more brutal too...

Would be better if our government acted like communists, just kill whoever commits a crime silently and inform the family 7 days later while asking money for the bullets used. Else soon enough, everyone will be criminals

its more than likely the illegals that mbeki is welcoming with open arms..the same illegals trained in torture and de-sensitised in mugabe's youth brigade (carte blanche 2 weeks ago anyone?!?), sounds very familiar to the tactics used by mugabe..

Mmm I must've missed that chapter of the Communist Manifesto.

Normally 3rd Degree just murders the truth. I'm not sure which tends to be more sensationalist, it or Special Assignment.

"drinking to get drunk" on Special Assignment tonight... i just quit alcohol for a month, not sure if it will be a good show to watch?

Have yet to see a Special Assignment that "murders the truth." If the truth is sensational what do you expect?

Oh and both win Journalism Awards (for good reporting) don't they?

As usual your comments is noxious. Facts is facts. Did you see the specific groups of people involved or did you not watch it at all.
