Netgear DG834G - lifeline for low/unstable SNR?

Hey peeps.

Can anyone with specifically the Netgear DG834G Router agree to statement that it seems that it is able to hold your line up for much longer than any other router.

I've checked out many sites on the net - and alot of the people concur on this.

Seems that the most routers force a RESYNC if it detects it going below 4-6.

Our company uses two of these specific routers; one in Jo'burg & the other in Geore. We are connected via these two routers with a VPN and it works like a charm.

The only thing is Telskum which have a problem in the South Cape with speed. Our connection in George is 4096kbs, yet we can download Telskum's test file at ±40kbps - if you are lucky.

The routers are fine, just make sure you have upgraded to the latest software.

telkom mega100wr 4/10
telkom 5102g 7/10
dlink 300t 5/10
telkom router pots (marconi) 2/10
marconi 4 port white wifi 8/10

I run a IT company and I've sold many Netgears, but I now prefer the routers from Linksys (Cisco Systems) If you look a bit deeper, the Netgear can get very hot causing a failure until they cool down. I've actually seen a Netgear burn the top of a UPS shell brown.

well - its going to be in a ok-temperature place - i'll make sure of proper airflow ect..

i cannot sit stuck with these telkom modems...my line is not optimal - and various modems are giving me variable results.

so time to move up to the next level.

i'll consider the linksys.....later :)
 
MrNutz where can i order that modem/router? which site?
 
i did mine from prophecy.co.za

just check - there are 2 other retailers with cheaper prices but stock was an issue with both of them
 
I have the DG834G and it is indeed a great product ... but the problem is ... that everytime there is something wrong with the connection .. telskum immediately blame the router .... so can still be problems ... even if not from the device itself :)
 
Is the GT also good for LOW SNR?Coz i need the best 1 out of the 2 for my low SNR :(

I have a Netgear DG834GT, and with the following stats, which to me are not optimal either, it keeps the connection up for the 24 hrs Teklom allows:

Downloads also hapens at 400KB/s + (server, shaping, time of day etc, allowing)

Connection Speed 4096 kbps(Down) 384 kbps(Up)
Line Attenuation 56.0 db(Down) 31.5 db(Up)
Noise Margin 8.0 db(Down) 14.0 db (Up)

It is standing upright because of the apparent/potential heat problems.
 
uhm - now don't go out in hordes purchasing this router - let me first verify it towards SA conditions...the articles i went thru were majority UK based....so i'll give feedback , make no mistake about that.

otherwise i get the flak for whatever results u may/may not achieve :D
 
obtained router this morning..

installation was quick , no issues at all

however...not worth the hype in terms of holding a line steady.

imho , it compares DIRECTLY with the mega100WR with line values...

where i normally have between 8 and 30 snr on 5102g/marconi 4port wifi (tower look) - the netgear 834 and mega100wr can't get it higher than 15-18

only had one drop so far - but it took 41 seconds to regain sync where as all the others are sub 30sec... i shall report back l8r for more

uhm....maybe your line IS really the problem seeing as you've been through so many routers?!?! It seems you keep buying/exchanging a new vehicle in the hope that it will drive better on a pothole road?!?!?!

I've had my DG834GT for a year now and no problems what-so-ever. So much so that I've gotten my folks one and bought another one for the office. I have 8 colleagues who also have the same and not one is problematic.

But as mentioned before...make sure you stand it upright as they tend to heat up a bit...but it's all good in winter :D
 
ok i'll rephrase then...

it doesn't help much in holding up a sick line steady..

the reason i went for this router - many articles suggested that the 834 keeps your line up - while running on almost no SNR

instances where people say they were running on values 2 and 3 - with no disconnections.

so yeah...GREAT router - make no mistake...just a situation of my line being super "stukkend" .
