A good move I reckon as we in a democracy should value divergent voices even if you don't always agree with them .... look at the example set by the PAC and Freedom Front in the Cape Town city council.

Al Jazeera wouldn't be out of place in Zimbabwe :D
At least we would have most angles covered.
Al Jazeera for the Islamists, CNN for the liberals and FOX for conservatives.
Generally speaking. :D

I thought this thread was going to be about Al Jazeera offering an alternative to Multichoice. (As long as they carried Cartoon Network...)

I've actually watched a fair amount of the English Al Jazeera in Zambia. It's very slick and polished with a look and feel that's 100% in line with Western news channels like CNN and Sky. It is also more balanced in its reporting than I expected it to be. In other words, while it leans towards a pro-Palestine perspective (for example), it's certainly not a bunch of rabid Islamic extremists baying for American blood.
Oh and yet again you gave me a chuckle AlanF. CNN is liberal? lolz.

Al Jazeera is part of the DSTV lineup, so if you cancel you won't get it.
We all know it's propaganda. Just the other side of it to balance the extremely US-centric Discovery/History/N.Geo channels. Personally I think Russia Today (RT) gives quite an unbiased view.

Rather ironic that you have to go to the Russians to get the unbiased unvarnished news. :D

Just as long as it doesn't start causing an uprising in our local Muslim community.
The last thing I want on my door step is another Nigeria, Ethiopia, Somalia, etc.
Fortunately the Muslim community in SA isn't too big so maybe it will only cause a few more marches, a bit more condemnation of the US and Israel and a few more trips for MBeki to go and do his mediation stunts/tricks in the Middle East. :)

Everything G Dubya Bush does is in a 'god's' name as well apparently.
Al Jazeera,,, why not.
Do you think they will censor the beheading and execution clips out of the broadcast in the name of protecting say children from pornography or something, as you do in SA, you know

as long as the subscription does not go up for this nonsense....why not rather include it on the indian package so its audience can pay for it.

IMO Al Jazeera present a MUCH more balanced view than CNN and BBC could ever even think of doing. The problem with many other news stations is that they are incapable of being objective. Their views are shaped by their opinion. Its not an ideal example but it illustrates the point I am trying to make. I am referring to the situation where on CNN during the whole New Orleans tragedy thing, they referred to some black people as looters, while the white people were referred to as foragers. Its like my old boss, who once told an indian colleague fo mine that chinese people were dirty and that even indian people are "cleaner" than them, and thought she had just given her a compliment. CNN are like this, they reason and argue from a sense of "rightness"

Al Jazeera is a well-funded and professional media organisation. They happen to be the outlet of choice for the press releases of certain radical islamic factions, but they do actually make a better job of reporting than most western news agencies.

Yeah I can agree with that for sure. Western Media is all influenced by the money and the politicians.

Al Jazeera are Muslims, so the Muslim bombers give them their footage to screen which CNN won't do. That's their claim to fame. Also they managed to get better coverage of the Gulf wars based also on their Islamic affiliations. Muslims helping Muslims I suppose rather than 'better' journalism.
