Yes I am spamming this forum for more free technical advice :D:D:o

Okay so I am in the market for a LCD TV that is HD ready. Makro has a Samsung 40" LCD (LA40S71) on promotion at R14 999.00.

I just wanted the opinion of people who have more knowledge than me on LCD TV's as to weather this is a good deal. It seems like it has everything I could want (1080p, decent size etc etc) and the price seems good for the brand but perhaps I am not seeing something? I dont want to make a 15K mistake...

I posted here cos I wanted the opinion of gamers as I would like to connect this to an Xbox360 (or PS3) to watch upscaled DVD's and Hi def gaming. Thanks in advance for the advice.

URL is as follows (dont know how to make it clickey though :()

http://www.makro.co.za/ProductDetail.aspx?cat=6273&prod=34169&SKU=000000000000112618|EA

Looks like its a good deal. If you can take your X360 to the shop in question and test the heck out of the Samsung before buying it. :)

I know very little about this sort of thing but I have seen a lot of people recommending Plasma's instead of LCD's..

Especially for gaming and sports when using a large screen....

Nice idea useless but LCD TV is the first step in my master plan for lounge domination :)

Will get Xbox only after the LCD is bought as I figure the best plan is to get the most expensive purchases past my better half while I can.

Are you sure it has 1080p? Because on the Makro website it only says 720p/1080i.

I am sure I read a review somewhere that said it was 1080p. Perhaps I am mistaken though and the samsung website does not help much to be honest.

Would there be a visible difference on a screen of this size between 1080i and 1080p? In other words is this a deal breaker?

I have the Samsung LCD (37" for R9 999) which I bought last month at a shop in Clearwater Mall. Mine is plugged into a PC for gaming and Vista Media Center Edition. For gaming, it’s excellent. However, I have only tested it on Fifa2007 and Half Life 2. The colors are brilliant. The motion response time is very good.

While I was at the shop, I compared Sony Bravia 40" LCD, Samsung LA40N71 40" LCD, and Samsung PS42C7 42" Plasma. If you are spending 15K, I would definitely go for the Bravia. The reasons being;

The Bravia Engine does a much better HD job than Samsung’s Digital Natural Image engine. However, should you decide to stick to Samsung, I’d suggest you visit the Shop in Clearwater Mall (Pick & Pay entrance) or another shop in Fourways Crossing (next to Look & Listen). They both stock latest brand of Samsung LCD’s, the”Bordeaux Art” series which comes with:

8000:1 dynamic contrast ratio vs. LA40S71’s has 3000:1
3 HDMI connections vs. LA40S71’s has 1
Also, additional features are “Movie plus function”, “Wider colour enhancer” and beautiful Bordeaux Art design looks.

Thanks for the great advice dlk001. My impression was that 15K was cheap for a good brand 40" LCD. If you say that I can expect to pay the same for a Sony then perhaps I should calm down and take my time rather than rush in and grab this cos its on "special"

I spent sometime over the last weekend and the prices I saw were a bit higher than 15K. Having said that I didnt go through to the shop in Clearwater that you mentioned. I know of them and they are specialists so I would prefer to get it from them if 15K would allow me to look at options and is not some uber Makro special.

Have a look at Game, they have some killer deals on LCD TV''s. Samsung and LG. Advert breaking tomorrow May 31.

Thanks folks. I will wait for the Game advert tomorrow GTi. I did pay a visit to Sounds Great in Clearwater last night. I was all set in my mind that LCD was the greatest thing since sliced bread (which is a really great thing!)

Then this bright sales dude placed the Samsung LCD (LA40S81) next to the new Samsung Plasma (PS42Q91H) running a split signal of the same pictures.

OMFG!!

I almost bought the damm plasma on the spot! (Fortunately my better half reigned me in!!)

I expected to see a slight difference in picture quality but I was prepared to accept that and go for the LCD as it is the newest tech but the clarity on the plasma was very very far advanced. The detail level that I could make out on the plasma was at least 20% better than on the LCD!!

Now I have to go back to the drawing board and have a rethink about the whole LCD vs Plasma debate

I certainly didnt expect such a noticeable difference in the quality of the picture particulary as both units are the same price (give or take a few hundred). First I had to get my mind around the whole Xbox360 vs PS3 debate and now I have to wrap my mind around Plasma vs LCD, this is getting hectic

Plasmas have come a long way - I know the Panasonic plasmas are now Generation 9.

Hey will i found myself in the same situation as i wanna get myself 1 for my ps3, but my appeal to u is if u have some extra cash wait awhile as the new 40" (LA40M81) are just about being released that's why the old 1 is so cheap.. I've seen the (LA40M81) at a friends shop on display and it's amazing and has Full HD which includes 1080p, the only thing is Samsung don't have stock yet.. It's retailing there at 22k but will go for aroind 25k elsewhere.. So basically if you've got the extra cash be patient else get the (LA40S71) it's a really good deal.. :):)
