South Africa again rejected calls for tough action against Zimbabwe on Tuesday ahead of a visit by British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who is expected to press the issue.

Blair is scheduled to meet South African President Thabo Mbeki, who has been mediating between President Robert Mugabe's ruling Zanu-PF party and the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) opposition through quiet diplomacy.

Political will
South African Foreign Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said in a speech to Parliament on Tuesday that a hard line on Zimbabwe would only backfire.

"You must not push the country over the brink, you must pull it back from the brink. That is our approach," she said.

Dlamini-Zuma said political dialogue will succeed only if Zimbabweans show they are serious about finding solutions to that country's crisis.

Uhm but most of the MP's in Zimbabwe and some in South Africa still dont believe theres a crisis in Zimbabwe.

I have to agree with the gvt stance. Zimbabwe should sort out it's own problems and the fact of the matter is zanu-pf still has a huge support base who should learn the hard way that you should think before you vote just because some one has struggle credentials.
 
The ANC will not take a tough stand on Zimbabwe as most of the politicians dont see any wrongdoing.

Mugabe has more supporters outside his country than in, most notably SA.

I heard an interesting argument over this ... basically the theory is the the government here doesnt want to alienate mugabe - because then he will simply turn to his friends in china and elsewhere and we could get hardly anything done :/

But I do think they should be slightly more vocal on their own position...

Brink of disaster?
On the brink of bankruptcy?

At least the Government indirectly has admitted to this fact.
The level of this "brink" is of course open to interpretation.
I would say economically the country has past the point of "brink" using the Ministers own words. :sick:
Past the point of bankruptcy and charting new inflation data records, in other words.

Imagine if the rest of the world had that approach to the apartheid government of the 80's. Nothing would have changed - just like little is changing for the better in Zim.

That's because most the Zimbabweans are already here.

How difficult could it be to raise a $ 1 000 000.00 and have the octogenarian ass assassinated ?

I am calling on all South Africans to embargo Mugabe.

I am calling for companies to disinvest.

I am calling for SA to stop supplying electricity and fuel to Mugabe.

I am calling on sports teams to boycott Zimbabwe.

I am calling on SA to stand up to it's obligations to free the people of Zimbabwe from an oppressive and brutal regime.

I could go on but why bother.

SA will never do this.

Perhaps the shoe on the other foot does not fit anymore.
