Ok so while playing games, it runs quite well but the dvd drive makes some really funky noises, then, once the noise stops, i get the dreaded "Unreadable disc" error. Sometimes this doesnt happen at all, the games run perfectly for a few hours but just now, i had to restart my game 3 times in the space of 10 mins.

Problem is, i cant take the console back coz i bought it overseas and well, the firmware is also flashed (purely for backup purposes only ). Is there any way i can get a replacement drive and just stick it in or something?

Try cleaning the drive, seems like there could be dirt on the laser.

Optical technology is always very fickle. The noises could be caused by inferior quality DVDs that are slightly unbalanced or a motor that's busy failing. Try putting the console vertically or horizontally or placing it on a pillow. Hope that helps!

It is possible to get a replacement drive from electronic places and guys who sell xbox's (and have dead ones). I have bought a couple of consoles and had work done on them by guys on bidorbuy. I have no affiliation with them, just a happy customer. Details follow.

Woh hold up there. Don't go swapping anything. It's still under warranty, just get it replaced. You touch those innards and your Warranty is null and void.

i have had the same thing and it had to do with the cd. i scratched the cd by doing something stupid (moving the xbox from horizontal to vertical with the cd spinning) some. Only when the game reaches a particular part that it has to load from the cd that is scratched does it freak out.

nothing handy andy couldnt fix. I cleaned the cd well and now everything is fine. So check the cd. If the cd is fine to the naked eye then try another game and see.
