DSTV Card for Vista (2 Tuners)

I am looking for a DVB-S card.
Need it to work with Vista Ultimate (MCE), I am dual booting my system with Linux and would like it to work with MythTV aswell if possible.

1. Any suggestions on which DVB-S card to use, I would like to pick-up 2 feeds or more if possible, so I can record and watch at the same time ?
2. Is it better to use a software cam or a built-in hardware cam, concidering I want 2 feeds ?
3. I am only ordering my DSTV now, so it will be a new smart card. Which system will work with the newer DSTV cards ?
4. Are there any knowen problems yet with the whole locking card to decoder thing?
5. Is a CI just a connector for your CAM, which reads your DSTV card ?

Please let me know where I can get the card, I am a computer dealer so distributor would be good.

Maybe pm Tivoza he might be able to point you in the right direction. AFAIK the problem will be no1 finding a DVD-s card with a CAM slot and no2 finding the latest version of the IRDETO CAM.
 
The CI is the slot for your smartcard. I recommend you buy an existing package of decoder/card from a 2nd hand dealer and get that connected first. That way, the older version smartcard will be more compatible with your PC system. It also allows you to use a 'software 'CAM (software EMUlator of a CAM). These are freely downloadable.

You can always order an Irdeto cam, but they are scarce and can cost around R1000.

I'm not sure which models are best at the moment. Try looking at the dedicated sat sites.

Twin tuner is an excellent idea if you want a little DVR. Not all tuners are as good as each other, so try and go for quality.
 
... Oh, and you will also need to install an LNB with two connectors. Installers use these for the DSTV PVR and the 'Dual View' systems. They cost a little extra.

Then you have to run TWO lots of cable from the aerial.

Of course you have thought of all that too .... ;)

I already have a Dish with two cables from my Areial, just need to finish the cabling off in the roof, but that is pretty straight foward.. :)

So this sounds like it will be trickier then I thought.
When I buy a second hand system and card, wich cards are more compatable, do they have codes ?
Any Idea's where I can get a second hand DSTV system from, I am in durban ?

I will try and search for a Sat forum to find the DVB-S card with 2 tuners, any sugestions ?

I will give complete feed back on my project, just watch the forums..

There are 2 DVB-S cards available that I know of.
The DNTV Live! QuattroS DVB card is the most popular at the moment or the FlyTV Express X1 MST-STA2 form Lifeview.They do not have CI support though , but they both support DVB-T as well(for future use when all TV will be digital).
Most users running a dual tuner setup on PC use 2 DVB cards.
You can record one channel and watch another with a single tuner DVB card providing that both channels are on the same frequency(AltDVB Software).
I used to have 2 cards installed , 1 X Skystar2 card and 1 X Technotrend DVB-S 1500.I used it to watch TV on Intelsat 7/10 and record a broadcast from Telstar12 at the same time.

A CI(Common Interface) slot is a PCMCIA slot , like on most laptops.You install the CAM(Conditional Access Module) into the CI slot.The CAM can have various encryption firmware installed like Irdeto , Crytoworks , Nagravision etc. or even all of the mentioned encryptions systems and more.(Dragon CAM)
The CAM reads the smartcard info for decryption.

Forget about Vista MCE for DVB-s(not supported).
I have tried and failed , only a few FTA channels was working with a DVB-t to DVB-s mapper application.
MCE was intended for DVB-T and cable only.

Software that works well is Progdvb , DVBviewer , AltDVB , Mytheatre and for linux I use VDR and MythTV.
VDR is my first choice because MythTV requires too much backend configuring and have too many dependencies.
For DSTV you must have the correct CAM or it will not work , because all DSTV smartcards from ver.4 and up are a lot "smarter" and requires an original Irdeto cam.Irdeto Access is always 1 step ahead of piracy(stopping the hacker community from sharing smartcard keys over the internet).
That is why Multichoice upgrades the decoders and onboard CAM's on a regular basis.Too many smartcard sharing devices was becoming freely available to the public.

A lot of channels surfaced on Hellas Sat , South Africa beam.

Okay if a cam can just slot into a PCMCIA slot can I just get a PCMCIA - PCI card, the ones we use for 3G cards ? Mustek, rectron and webstorm sells them. (Webstorm sells directly to the public aswell if anyone wants one)
I just need to know which cam to import, Dual CAM Irdeto plus Conax or Euro-Irdeto CAM ?
Has anyone used one of these cams ?

If I am understanding correctly I can then plug this cam into a PCMCIA - PCI card which I get from Mecer. Will this work to decode DSTV to MythTV ?
I am guessing that MythTV must pick-up the CAM some how.

Then back to the DVB-s Card, DNTV Live! QuattroS DVB - Where can someone get this card from and does this have built in hardware mpeg encoders ?
I have emailed the manufactures, no reply yet.

Now once I have my "DNTV Live! QuattroS DVB", "PCMCIA - PCI" and "Dual CAM Irdeto plus Conax" will I be able to watch DSTV ?
I know there will be some software fiddling, which I should be able to handle, just need to know if this will work. I don't understand how the CAM and the DVB-S card work together to bring the feed in and decode it, I am assuming your DVB software has the ability to read the cam.

Looking forward to your responses, starting to get close to understanding this stuff, I think... :D

I only meant that the CI slot is similar to a PCMCIA slot and you can not use a normal PCMCIA interface as a CI. Some DVB cards have the CI slot on the card itself and other connects to a separate CI module with a cable.

This card does not have a hardware mpeg decoder.Only cards like the Technotrend Premium S-2300 have mpeg hardware onboard but costs twice as much as the budget cards.

I only have a Dragon cam and it does work , but only with the old ver.2 smartcards.Also tested a Matrix Reborn CAM and it works for a minute or 2 but resets itself and wipes the firmware from the cam.
The original Euro-Irdeto cam should work because it is a product of Irdeto Access , but I have not tested one yet.
 
How will the smartcard marriage system impact non DSTV decoders? I heard people with dreambox decoders are having issues since the system has been implemented

Another thing I am confused by Vista MCE not working, why would there be the guide for it if no one is using it. It must be able to work with DSTV ?
 
The only DVB plugin that worked was MDIrdeto Cam and it uses a Phoenix compatible card reader that runs of a comm port.MCE does not support any softcam or cam emulator plugins.
The last Irdeto cam plugin was ver 1.07 and stopped working with DSTV smartcards a while back.
The developer of these plugin's website is @ http://joshyfun.peque.org/.
Most DVB softcam plugin developers don't bother anymore because more users are using Dragon or Diablo cams or buy dreamboxes that have these Cam's embedded.

It doesn't affect the Dreamers.

I haven't come across this box, but to be safe try a version less than 5.

Hi, I don't want to steal/hijack this thread, but seeing as all of you are prity clued up with all this type of stuff, I have 2 quick questions...

1) ANybody know of any good free tv-capture/tuner software I have a lifeview flyTV dvb-T hybrid capture card (DVB-T and analog). The software that came with it is ok, but i have to rescan every time i reboot, dono why the channels are still there but they don't work (think its the cable/air option) and i want to be able to capture in a compressed format, like divx or xvid... I used virtual dub with my previous card (ATI all in wonder pro) but when i use virtualDub with the new card, i can't get audio?!? i get no audio in virtual dub because i can't select the right source or something, so if you could point me to some cool free app, or maybe help me figure out, what is wrong why i can't capture with audio...

But it has something to do with both, I have dstv and a DVB tuner, i want to record dstv on my pc, using capture software but i don't have good capture software. And i reckoned people in this thread could maybe help me, any ways if you can't cool...
