Arms Manufacturers must be licking their lips!

This will be interesting to watch. With a superpower like the US there must be counter actions to try and normalize the situation, and superior firepower seems like a good start :D
 
While I'm no fan of US foreign policy, the Russians are the ones playing "who's **** is bigger?" There is a real threat against Europe, and absolutely no reason to attack Russia.
 
Seems Putin is still stuck in his KGB mode :o. Just look at the poisoning of that guy in London. Oh well if you allow regimes like Iran to get nukes and ICBMs what do you expect.

Disagree. Bush is the one stuck in Cold War mode. Putin and all the other Russians want democracy and peace. Mind you they have always been pro-peace.
The US sees them as an economic threat, so they rattle sabres and surround Russia with missiles. Someone please explain how ringing that country with a missile shield will protect Czech and Poland from missiles coming at them from Iran or N.Korea. R100 for the most convincing explanation.

Oh, and please post the evidence linking Putin to the poisoning in London.
 
You disagree Putin was behind the poisoning? Then why not let the UK extradite the suspect to face the music? Putin is a mafia boss thats all. He was in the KGB and has not changed one bit. Damn commie :D

It isn't a matter of opinion. There is just no proof Putin was involved.

Britain was well aware that no extradition was possible. Russia asked them last year to extradite a Russian criminal suspect, but Britain REFUSED.

Must Russia now break their own rules just because Britain says so??

Nope, Russia is a democracy. Why not go and see for yourself.
 
My opinion: The "cold war" between the US and Russia never seized - it just took on another dimension. Russia's economic state forced it to open-up towards the West but it never intented to capitulate (as many seem to interpret it). I believe Russia will again take a hard stance - and it still possesses enough nuclear abilities to destoy mankind. The fact that the US still pushed forward with their nuclear shield proves to me that they still have their doubts about Russian long term intentions.

China and India are now starting to pull swords too - that will make for interesting alliances and geopolitical chess moves in the decades ahead.

Anyone believing the current "peace" to be a lasting one will get a nasty shock (probably not too long down the line).

But this is how I see it.

No sorry you are dead wrong. I had a Russian girlfriend and I heard what goes on there. Russia is run by the maffia. Much the same like here. I also knew a guy who used o be in the KGB and now lives in SA. Her friend. There is no democracy. It is governed by money and crime.

She was winding you up. Things were turbulent during the Yeltsin era, but Putin cleaned it up. He took on the oligarchs and chased them to the UK and elsewhere. It is safer there than in London - believe me I know. Unless you have actually lived there in the recent past then you are only going to get half truths and exagerations from people probably too young to remember.

I really don't want to go into a pro/anti US debate here but the anti-US crowd often do not know/understand/appreciate what the US is doing behind the scenes to try to manage nuclear threats. My big worry lies with non-governmental forces gaining access to nuclear technologies and materials. Dirty bombs in the wrong hands are becoming more of a realistic threat as days tick by. This is one of the main reasons why I'm against nuclear plants in SA. With our poor security standards it will be easy for malicious types to get hold of material to make crude dirty bombs. The purpose of a dirty bomb is to spread radioactive material in the air using conventional explosives - and nuclear waste from plants is ideal. I will not be surprised to hear a report on radio/tv soon about one of these devices being used somewhere.

I don't think much of this applies to Russia. Maybe you are thinking of the former USSR. Even that problem is heavily exagerated by the USA. If it were so easy to get hold of nuclear material El Qaeda would have done it already.
 
there is a reason and a big reason for russia to defend itself, US and russia dont see eye to eye and i believe if war where to break out with lets iran or something along those lines, russia would not side with america and i think america knows this

american have to be at war with somebody :) its just what they do

if i where the US and i went to war i would not like to have russia going against me

Dont knock Putin too much, he is a strong charismatic leader, and very popular, both with the old school and the reformists.
The Russian psych must also be considered, when looking at this scenario, Russia is the Motherland, making most Russians more patriotic than the average American.
The great patriotic war, (WW2 against Germany) is a big part of their pride and nationalism, and the "cold" war is still very fresh in many minds, as is apartheid in this country.
There is still an understandable and very tangible mistrust of the West.
He is doing what any other world leader would do in the face of a creeping threat, and his ensuring that he has a strong military to counter any aggression. Not necessarily from the West or the U.S., but also from a number of countries that lie to the south all ending in "Stan".
The Ukraine, is also right next door, and there is no counting on which way they may swing.

IMO, the US should know better than to start a whole "cold war" again, especially with their deficit! Hey, then again, an arms race would benefit their economy! All those European countries would come running to US arms manufacturers for new defense systems! Pure genius!:D

Cold war my foot. Someonse needs to double-check their history. Cold wars are not a decision, they are a circumstance.
