Hi,
I'm looking to buy a working DSTV decoder with smart card and remote.
I'm looking for a model 910 or 933. I'm in Johannesburg and can collect. I'm looking to spend R300.
Thanks,
Brett

You can get a new one in Hi Fi Corp for R469. You can put this in the Wanted section under classifieds...

If you buy a 2nd hand decoder, don't forget to ask the seller to give you a signed letter stating that they sold it to you and they must also include the serial number and smartcard number on the letter. The seller must be the same person who registered with multichoice. Otherwise multichoice will not activate the decoder.

Cash Converters has these for around R250-R300. Overpriced IMHO. Make sure you get a smartcard. DSTV sell them on their own for R500. (Yes 500). And the remotes are hard to find on their own.

Trust me, it is cheaper to buy one new, the cost and effort needed to activate a second hand one is crazy! My uncle GAVE me his decoder and it still worked out cheaper to BUY one!
And if the old model doesn't work Multichoice will charge you about R330 to give you another second-hand Decoder with only a 3 month warranty, as I found out recently.
I was on the verge of buying a new Decoder for about R489 until the Aunty behind the counter brought out one of those contract/agreements where basically you have a one year warranty and after that you are on your own with all sorts of other intellectual rights in Multichoice's favour.
As I couldn't read the contract there and then as it appeared too onerous and with queue behind me, I said no thanks.
There was obviously no option for debate on the contents of the contract.
It was either sign on the dotted line or no Decoder.
Sorry, but I don't sign anything without knowing it's contents.
Took the replacement Decoder for the 300 odd Bucks instead.

Our dual view got struck by lightning last year. We have that R20 something insurance on it.
Took us 2 weeks to get a new "second hand" decoder and we had to pay to get the second tv connected again, because somehow the receiver on that side got busted too ;)

Thanks for all the comments.
I just called HiFi Corp - they've got new ones for R529.
Regarding buying used, yes, you need to get the letter of transfer. But the last one I bought for R300 (with a SIM card) has worked out just fine. I took the unit to DSTV for testing and they did a change of ownership there and then.
This unit is for my Mom's guesthouse in Kuruman, so I don't want to buy new if I can help it.
I'll keep looking...

I'm sure brett has made a plan in the 15 months since he started looking
Better option is to buy a new 1110 for R400 so you have the option to use xtraview at a later stage
