In a dramatic turn in a committee meeting of the Tshwane Metro Council, an ANC plan to deprive hundreds of poor white families of their houses was voted down. An ANC-councillor, Mr. Derek Coetzee, voted against his caucus and together with opposition parties against the measure, defeating it by a vote of 7-6.

The opposition parties represented in the Corporate and Shared Services Committee are: Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus), the Democratic Alliance (DA), Christian Democratic Party (CDP) and the African Christian Alliance (ACA).

According to Mr. Conrad Beyers, FF Plus Councillor and member of the Committee, the vote was a victory for the opposition in the City Council. "The ANC can be beaten, and this was proved by opposition parties today", Beyers said.

The plan could mean that approximately 900 poor white residents of Wolmer in Pretoria North would lose their houses when the Council sells it to "previous disadvantaged" people.

Wolmer residents protested in Church Square during a session of the Council’s Corporate and Shared Services portfolio committee. Their petition demanded that the rental houses be transferred at reasonable terms to people who have been living there for a long time, as were done in numerous former black Townships across the country since 1994.

Do you know what the ANC plan was for the people that were already living there extermin8tor, if the plan had been passed as such?
 
AFAIK - the plan was to offer the houses up for sale - with first preference to Previously Disadvantaged Individuals - these people are now paying a rental of R350 pm on the houses and say whatever the amount of the sale they would not be able to afford to buy it

The way I c it the people in Wolmer has been previously disadvantaged and currently still are disadvantaged.

When will the ANC learn to just leave PTA the way it is. They just keep on falling on their noses there.
 
To be fair, the land is prime land belonging to the Municipality and they can get alot more than R350 pm for the land - AFAIK - they did offer the people alternative housing in Soshanguve which they didn't want

But think about it for a second.

I live in a white area. In a House.

You then in turn want to relocate me to a Black area with no house :confused: does this make sense. Taking from someone to just give to someone else and leaving me in the street :eek:
 
Surely there is no longer such a thing as a "white area" in this country anymore???

1. Majority white area
2. Majority Black area

Same as me saying a farmer area and a urban area.

1. Farmers stay there (Majority)
2. Urban people stay there (Majority)

Interesting tactic. Offer them duff land in a place they don't want to go and then claim they are being unreasonable. When Zille tries to offer squatters in Hout Bay alternative land, they scream and stamp their feet and Cosatu comes to their defence and the whole idea gets squashed, despite the fact that the squatters are being a nuisance (unlike this situation).

It seems white people have few rights left.

Whats wrong with that? The majority of people that live in Soshanguve are poor, so I these guys can't afford to the houses there then they must move. It is not like those houses are being given away, is it?

We need to move away from this segragation based on colour. Its funny how White people say we are equal and should be treated as such, then something like this happens. People get relocated all the time and now just becuase they don't like where they are being offered housing, the council must now continue to make a loss on that land.

And yes people, there are houses in Soshanguve.

They are paying for the houses :rolleyes:
The ANC wants them out so that the Previously disadvantaged people(Black people) can take the houses. As the ANC doesn't want to build more houses they promised their people. That is the picture here. Maybe it's clear now

Then if we afford these guys the opportunity to stay close to PTA, why the uproar with the proposed mixing of low cost residential houses with existing suburbs?

The problem is not the housing

The problem is taking people from their houses. Black or White
Build new ones and everyone is happy. Why do you need to put people on the street just to cater for another. That is sick and inhumane. So if you're all for it..... :sick:

Then using your logic, the City of Cape Town should not evict the people in Hout Bay? Nonesense, if either Cape Town or Tshwane want to realise the full value of the land they own, these relocations need to happen. And they are not being thrown out in to the street as you put it, in either case there have been alternatives presented.

You and I both know that the people being moved are being moved from shacks and comparable type accomodations and not beach houses as you put it.

Ok let me put it this way.

You live in a 2 bedroom house, running water, electricity and close to schools

I move you to a informal settelment, no running water no electricity.

with me doing so I move the people living in those shack to your house.

Is this moving forward in the New South Africa of going in circles ?
 
My info is that the ANC will attempt to sidestep the committee's recommendation and go ahead with the measure anyway by using their majority in the Council.

Although the victory for opposition parties in the committee is significant, it may only be a temporary victory. The Mayoral Committee is not bound to accept the committee's verdict, although it would be a very unusual step to deviate from a committee decision.

If the ANC pushes this through regardless the committee's decision, which is based on thorough research and deliberation, it could justifiably be viewed as an act of aggression against that community.

In that case legal action could be the only remaining defense. In numerous previous black Townships these sub-economic houses were transferred to tenants at reasonable terms, and there are compelling arguments in favour of doing the same for these underpriviledged communities.
 
To the guys against these families moving to Soshanguve: Would you be ok with poor black families moving into previously white areas? If not then why all the furor over moving poor white families into previously white areas?

I thought that group areas no longer apply - people should live wherever they can afford to live. If you can't afford to pay the price to live in a prime area, then you shouldn't expect a free ride just because you belong to the race group that the area was previously assigned to.
