Are DSTV selecting movies and shows based on the colour of the actors?

Just something I've noticed. A lot of the movies seem to be selected for the colour of the lead actors:-
Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, Will Smith, Haile Berry, Sidney Poitier, James Earl Jones, Whoopy Goldberg, Samuel L. Jackson etc.

I enjoy many of these actors, but I can't help feeling that we don't need to manipulate the choices. For one, by narrowing the selection, arguably the quality of the overall selection is inevitably reduced.

DSTV is also showing many locally produced movies and short stories between the big Hollywood productions. This doesn't seem a bad idea, but why put them on the premier channels like MM and MM2?

Are they being used as cheaper filler so they don't have to field so many more expensive movies?

I think you're being a bit paranoid man, they show whatever is available. If a movie happens to have black lead actors then so be it, they show plenty that have white lead actors too. Maybe blame Hollywood for releasing too many movies with black actors (since they're just showing us movies released in Hollywood), but personally I don't care what race they are, as long as the movie is good.

If you have a look at who has co-starred with these guys, then you would see that Hollywood doesn't have a problem with race either. Will Smith - Gene Hackman, Jeff Goldblum, Tommy Lee Jones etc. Samuel L. Jackson - Bruce Willis, Vin Diesel, Nicholas Cage etc. Halle Berry - John Travolta, Billy Bob Thornton, Hugh Jackman etc.

I don't see why race has to become an issue with absolutely everything. It doesn't mean that because a movie has a black actor in it, that DSTV is enforcing racial quotas. Just my 2.43 cents worth...

Why does it always have to be race race race? Seems like a magic word these days.. .. ..

Deviating from Topic.

DSTV Movie selection of late is K@K.
Saturday Night Prime Time Viewing, raining cats and dogs in Cape Town, cannot do much else other than snuggle up in bed and DSTV are screening On MNet for the umpteenth time, that load of rubbish called "Texas Chainsaw Massacre".:(

I am finding better movies to watch on TV1, 2, 3 and ETV, even with the advert interruptions.

Now that i do believe is the case with many of the k@k movies we are subjected to.
Sci Fi channel was canned for "not being financially viable" read between the lines and you get "we are too cheap and stingy to pay for the viewing rights on the newer programs"

Or the same time the Sci Fi Channel was canned another Soccer Channel was added.
Mutichoice might have many channels, but there are times when I cannot find anything to watch.

Now one really does wonder how things add up - them soccer guys get paid $$$ and everything...

Maybe somebody really is crazy about soccer and voted sci-fi down in favour of soccer by stuffing a ballot box somewhere... :D

But agreed about carp shows... these days it isn't worth it to have Dstv - just go to your local video shop and rent a dvd or two :D

It seemed very apparent to me. It's as if someone said, OK, the TV service is in Africa, so we'll offer them films with an 'African' look and theme.

That's why I raised the topic chap! I feel the selection in being manipulated by colour.
