Apple unveils near final Mac OS X Leopard

So it seems that there really are some top secret features due in October.

The new Finder looks good and Quicklook looks smooth. Coverflow view in the finder is pure genius. Stacks looks pretty cool too.

This release makes Vista look downright shabby. I gotta get a pre-order in for the family pack.

I wouldn't get too excited about Leopard. The new Apple Airport extreme has been out how long already and its still not available locally. Judging from that we should start getting shipments of Leopard in April next year if we lucky. :(

Sure it is - I've had one for over a month now.

I guess I should have been clearer but I purchased the Extreme from ZaStore in early May.

BTW - I should have bought another express instead. ;)
 
Oook - I've been watching their website but the thing is always 'on order' - maybe I should have phoned them.... I wanted it for the USB ports and to replace my Linksys WRT - but I've in the interim plugged the printer into the Express and its working fine. Just worried about the Express 'burning out' as it appears to be very touchy with power spikes (that what I read somewhere though)

The usb port on the extreme has been my biggest headache. I regularly have to restart the router because it doesnt see my printer. The range is nice and my single other 'n' device enjoys the speed but I dont think I'd buy another.

And yeah - call em :)
 
I've had one of the new extreme's from ZAStore for a while now... I think mine came out of one of the very first batches to arrive and I'm extremely happy with it.

I don't have a printer attached so I can't speak to Bwana's hassles with the USB port, but I've got 3 external HDD attached via a hub. Every now and again one of the AirDisks loses connection, but all I have to do to get it back is activate the Airport Disk Utility in the task bar and everything is fine again.
I've never had to reboot because its has stalled or anything like that - its been solid as a rock for me.

Fortunately its not only me (according to apple support discussions) so they'll probably sort it out soon.

I'm going to see if aperture supports the usb disk storage or if it considers it a network drive.
 
The drives show up as if they are directly connected. Its a pretty cool setup, works like a dream and very fast.

I was hoping they would but Aperture sees it as a networked drive and so refuses to use it for a vault.

On the plus side - I see 7.1.1 is out, has been for the 8th, so perhaps that will end my printer hassles. :)

What is the difference between regular $129 purchase price and the family pack? When I last bought a new mac, I took the panther install disk and threw it on my iMac Graphite and then sold it on ebay for half the purchase price of my iBook G4. Did I break the copyright stuff there or is that legal?

Thinking of doing the same this time around also. ;)

Family pack licenses you to install the os on up to five computers - single user license - as the name implies - gives you a license for one.

Apple has never been big on stopping you from installing on more than one machine but with a new os coming out soon I'm wondering if they're going to sell one intel version and one ppc version or if it will be just the one universal.
 
Is Leopard going to be pc compatible? Or is it only for Macs?

I've heard speculation that it might be both but Apple would be shooting themselves in the foot if they did that.
