I think another step in the right direction would be not to charge for debit card transactions, I don't understand the logic behind credit card transactions being free and then charge for ones using a debit card. This would probably cut the amount of cash being used, which, considering all the security issues here, is only a good thing.
credit card transactions are charged to the vendor at between 2% and 5% of the transaction value
