Gauteng vehicle owners will have to replace their licence plates from the beginning of next year.

That's according to Ignatius Jacobs, Gauteng MEC for Public Transport, Roads and Works. ... Jacobs said all vehicle owners would have to replace their licence plates from January 1, 2008. Gauteng's vehicle owners could be forking out millions.

Does this governments desire to rip us off never cease? I bet you anything that the "contract" to make the new "security" plates will be awarded to a "struggle hero."

I also foresee that these new plates have to be renewed every 5 years, and that it will cost us R30.00 eNatis transaction fee to get some kind of print out prior to getting the plates made. :mad: :mad: :mad:
 
Ah, while schools burn and hospitals decay, at least we will have shiny new plates!

Why not just have new vehicles need new plates and old ones keep theirs?

So, what are these new plates going to cost us? What's the bet they're going to somehow squeeze in a "transaction fee" on eNatis as well?

It must be the done method of debate where he lives.
Most debates probably end up with a "jou ma" and followed by a broken bottle to the head.

Fine, my car's plates need replacing anyway, so I can do it then...

But why not just issue new plates to the new vehicles and let the older ones keep their numbers?

I wouldnt mind new plates, we already on "V" I was wondering wht the new ones would be and what colours.

How is a barcode going to provide information quicker than the cop entering my registration number in the computer? Does it really take that much time to type out 3 letters and 3 numbers followed by GP?

Surely reading off/typing off a registration number takes alot less effort than going up to it and swiping it with a barcode scanner?

Someone help me out here, but wouldn't the number of possible plates on our current system be in the millions, possibly tens of millions?
