Good now the world can see what this place is really like. Mother on TV her baby dead because the nurses would not help her. They said we on strike we no help !!

If that's true they should be charged with murder.

Can you have a degree in nursing? Do they also say the oath?
 
I saw the strike from my office window..I have to say the portion I saw was pretty well behaved.
 
Guys, what are the nurses supposed to do? My mom is a nurse. She's been working 12 hour shifts for as long as I can remember with very little pay. Something needs to happen to get these people proper pay! Sad about people getting hurt... :(

BTW. My mom has never striked in her life.

I think it's a 4 year degree ... last year is mostly practical if I have my facts straight. At Uni of JHB the nursing and education depts are combined.

I work with a lot of nurses and clinical nurse practitioners and many of them are amazing. These guys do complicated sutures, put IV lines on babies and HIV positive patients, heck some of them even know how to intubate patients and do intercostal drains and interosseous lines. The fact is that these people get paid peanuts. You may say that a baby died, and it's sad, but the government is happy about not paying the very people who care for
the neediest people in SA who demand the most care. The staff get sworn at, work in bad conditions without eye protection, heck there hardly ever is soap and towels for them to wash their hands, the security is lax and often they are abused and assaulted by armed, rowdy and criminal patients. All of this for a couple thousand Rand per month. Now the staff I know are probably NOT on strike but they support it, because they can't afford to live.
They're offering care that quality and expertise which requires a $50.000 pa
salary in the States but they get paid about a quarter of that. Is that fair?

Because these people don't strike for professional and reasons of principle,
the authorities know they can screw them over.

Nurses and doctors are paid peanuts in SA, hence they're leaving,
of course some can't leave. In SA the workload is greater than in
the 1st world countries, and people have to do multiple roles.

You're right, what can they do?

To me it makes no sense that the authorities don't reward loyalty,
and hard work, but they don't. For a nurse to get a bonus she needs
to not just work harder than a western counterpart, she needs to
do something extra above what she usually does, and it usualy has
nothing to do with patient care but administration stuff.
