I have this MB from Gigabyte and with 1X DDR400 512MB installed, so my question is can I install DDR400 and DDR2-533 1024MB in order to improve my RAM or use one type at a time?
BTW: How much is a DDR2-533 1GB?

IMO one or the other type but not a mixture - otherwise the mainboard would have a hissy fit...

Will not recommend it. Clock speed / timing issue will give you a couple of DSOB's IMO.

Killadoob is correct. DDR2 is physically incompatible with an older DDR slot.
However, this board appears to take both types of RAM (a very very strange thing to do). So you can add another 512Mb DDR400 chip or DDR2-533 chip and should see some performance improvement too.

nope rectron had a few of those gigabyte motherboards
yes it had 2 ddr 400 slots and 2 ddr2 533 slots i think it was mainly there for ppl who cannot afford to upgrade directly to ddr2.Back then ddr2 was still a bit expensive.Unlike now where u can get 1gig for R400
.and rectron doesn't sell any of those motherboards anymore.

Rather stick to 400mhz DDR ram, DDR2 533 is usually slower than the 400 mhz DDR ram simply because of the increased latencies. (CAS4 vs CAS2)
DDR2 533mhz also has no upgrade possibilities, it's slow and Intel is phasing DDR2 for DDR3 now anyway (they are backward compatible but seriously 533!)
EDIT: on second thought DDR2 is very cheap, so it depends on your budget
