Johannesburg - Gauteng vehicle owners will have to replace their licence plates from the beginning of next year.
That's according to Ignatius Jacobs, Gauteng MEC for Public Transport, Roads and Works. He was delivering his budget of R6.4bn for the 2007-08 financial year in the provincial legislature in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
Jacobs said all vehicle owners would have to replace their licence plates from January 1, 2008.
Gauteng's vehicle owners could be forking out millions.
It's not yet clear if this also means a change in the licence numbers.
Jacobs told Beeld outside the legislature that the province was fast running out of permutations of numbers, and would either have to add new numbers or introduce a new numbering system.
Improved security features
He did not want to elaborate on the new number plates, save to say they would include improved security features

Shouldn't the new plates rather be phased in - new vehicles/registrations - new plates
