10 days of standby time - That's what Nokia and other phone manufacturers also say abt their phones. I'll believe it when ppl have done tests on them.
Software development for the phone will largely be websites. I ran accross a shopping list example and an AIM messaging client via a browser.
Personally (Here in the US anyway) I would be using the built in 802.11g on the phone at the office and at home more than I would use the GSM data service. Does not cost me any more as I already pay a fixed rate for the internet access at home. It would be nice if it had 3G though just as an option for those overseas trips where it is available.
I played with a test unit here over the weekend and based on that I am more eager than ever to get one. Personally, I think it is going to provide some major competition for Blackberry. The test unit I played with was receieving mail from an exchange server, and syncing calendars and contact just as well, if not better than a Blackberry, although I donot know exactly how the guy had it set up. I will be calling him to help me get mine set up correctly when I get it.

You know that in order to turn the WiFi on you have to sign up for AT&T's crappy data packages right?
If that's true thats crap. Thats like saying you have to get a .mac account to turn on your airport on your mac. not kosher.
Why would you buy an iPhone and not subscribe to a data package?
Considering the overall lack of official info in their iphone packages how do you know that for a fact?

Which company in their right mind would coherse consumers into such a thing -> (Data package from AT&T to use WiFi).

And what about other countries worldwide where this phone is shipping to who dont have AT&T as a provider??

The data package comes with the phone so you might as well be pointing out that you need to take the data subscription so you can use the calendar, clock or notepad. Its part of the package.
No, you can opt not to sign up for the data package. You can use any of AT&T's rateplans. You just won't get any of the real cool features.

- how can we import these things here (assuming the cost is not too high)?
- will they work on our GSM network (including EDGE)?
- can we hook up to our own (home / work) WiFi HotSpots?

Considering SA doesnt have an unlimited data plan? I'd hate to work out how much the 5000 inclusive offpeak minutes alone would cost here let alone the 450 peak and 200 free sms'es.
EDIT - a vodacom contract with the 500 inclusive minutes and 100 free smses costs roughly double.

1500 minutes (weekends / off peak / peak) = R2995 = US$417 per month approx.
1Gig Data, 1000 SMS ...
Unless I am missing something AT&T is not cheap, it's almost FREE by comparison.
