Vodacom and Telkom's rocky relationship may be at an end

Telkom have provided Vodacom with BEE credentials up until now. I'm not sure Government would approve of Telkom selling its Vodacom stake to Vodaphone. That would make Vodacom wholly foreign owned.

I just don't see that happening.

The BEE transaction planned for March might have to be significantly enlarged if Telkom, cash-in-hand, are to leave quietly out the backdoor.

I think it more likely that Telkom will find local buyers.

Alternatively, Vodcom may list on the JSE and Telkom's 50% shareholding may be unbundled to Telkom shareholders. That would leave 19% in Government hands, 50% in Vodaphone's hands, with 31% privately held.
 
IMO the only reason that people buy Telkodemonopolies shares, is simply that people cannot directly buy shares in Vodacom.

If Telkodemonopolies decides to sell the Vodacom-jewel in its crown, then Vodacom or "Vodafone Africa" might become a publicly listed & traded entity in which people can buy shares.

All of this splitting speculation sounds too good to be true, but it would be great for Vodacom if it actually happens, and IMO good for SA Telecoms as it will reveal just how useless Telkodemonopolies is at its own core business - namely fixed lines.
 
All I know is that if this happens then its good news for our telecoms industry.
More competition will inevitably lower prices.

we just need some good "regulation" <spit> and we on our way
 
Soon as telkom starts buying into MTN I'm going to have to look into that MNP stuff. I refused a vodacom contract that work wanted to saddle me up with for exactly that reason. The Telkom connection. Now it seems I'll have to move the other way again
 
the thing that makes me laugh is that if telkom sells it share to Vodafone there is no way telkom is going to rival vodafone!!! the companys HUGE compared to tiny telkom
 
I am not particularly fond of Vodafone and would prefer not to be a customer of them due to their crappy rebranding of phones and the overall impression I get from them, but if Telkom buys into MTN, I am most certainly moving. MTN does not provide the type of service one would expect of such a large company and I have been putting off porting only because of the Telkom/Vodacom relationship.

If I could go back in time, I would have bought Telkom shares back in 2003, if only to ease the pain of that annoying monthly Telkom bill! :rolleyes:

But alas :(, I cannot, and I loathe to buy Telkom shares now, even if it meant having a piece of Vodacom in my pocket... If Telkom divested from Vodacom, yeah I would certainly consider any opportunity to buy Vodacom shares as lucrative! :D
