Looking abroad to bridge the skills gap

I haven’t seen Standard Bank advertising for people? IF there is such a shortage then why aren’t they aggressively looking for new staff?
I think part of the problem is that IT is still full of lily white males and Standard Bank is in a predicament as there is a risk that the hiring of more white males will reflect badly on the bank as well as the problem of managers bonuses every year being link to how much they increase their black staff percentage. The solution for them is that legislation says that nonexistent skills in South Africa can be outsourced and it will be excluded from BEE staff percentages calculations indirectly resulting in foreigners being preferred to local white males. As a result outsourcing is not something forced upon Standard Bank but actually part of their strategy and they are just spinning the skills shortage story in the media so they can sell it more effectively without government questioning them.

Someone should remind everyone that the majority of skilled overseas people are not black.
Besides, even if they "import" people to fulfill the roles, it really makes me, as a white, feel the love.

nice Racist comments mr sunshine..

as a programmer in this country I've been screwed over more than once! several times I walked into an interview and before it even started I got told I wouldn't get it cause I wasn't BEE compliant. I don't mark my race on my CV because I believe its irrelevant.

This country has serious issues. They bitch and moan about unemployment figures but won't give us the jobs because of stupid things like the color of our skin. Thats why some of the best programmers in South Africa leave. Its ****** politics like this that is ****ing up our country

if it wasn't for my gf I'd be gone. everyone who knows me knows that if it doesn't work out with me and her that I'm gone dude. I have enough "points" to get NZ or AUS citizenship but I'd prefer NZ but us beggars can't be choosers.

After watching the news the other night even she is considering it. We both love cold weather so NZ would be a perfect change for us. But for now I have a job so I'll keep my mouth shut.

last one out please turn of the light's, oops don't bother, ESKOM will do that ...

NZ not a bad idea, we leaving 10 Aug, we both in IT and jobs galore there and they love us South Africans. Unemployment in NZ = 3.8%, go figure !!!

I have always wondered if that 3.8% included people who do not want jobs?
Let us say a "stay at home mom".

Anyways, we are most likely going in Jan - Feb 2008.
Just need to finalise things here in ZA.

Wellington is currently the Software developement captial. The moment you have more than 2 years experience, you under 25 and not HIV+ then you're in. If you're married you get bonus points. They looking for more IT people.

South Africa has so much potential but the leaders need to grow up now. How can we put a granny in charge of communications in this country? She probably has no clue what Wimax and adsl are!

i suppose soon we'll all leave. start the proudly Ex-South African campaign then they'll rehire all of us and pay us tons to comeback. sounds like a career move to me ;)

I think you have hit the nail on the head.

The problem I have is with all the foreign companies taking money out our economy. There are so many foreign companies making millions here in SA.

There is not enough money to get me back once I am gone.
