Johannesburg - The Proudly South African organisation has been disowned by its sponsor, the trade and industry department, Business Day reported on Thursday.

It was struggling to survive without government funding or an office in a department of state, parliament heard on Wednesday.

Proudly South African has gone from crisis to crisis in its six years of existence. It was created as a vehicle to encourage South Africans to buy locally produced goods rather than imported ones.

The idea was to stimulate local production and preserve jobs in struggling industrial sectors such as clothing and textiles.

Proudly South African chief executive Manana Moroka asked MPs to help find the organisation a government office.

This was after a departmental letter said Proudly South African was neither an agency nor a non-governmental organisation in the department.

Proudly South African was recently told that it was wrongly classified and that it was a Section 21 not-for-profit company.

"For six or seven years we have been reporting directly to the department but we were recently informed that we are not part of them.

"We are lost now and would like Cabinet to allocate us to another department," Moroka said.

Inkatha Freedom Party MP Eugenia Chang and African National Congress MP Danny Oliphant agreed that there should be state funding for Proudly South African.

Oliphant said that some government departments did not use the logo, indicating that they were not members.

He suggested that if all government departments were members and paid a fee of R500 000 a year, this could solve the organisation's funding woes.

Thank you, but R500 000 a year from each department?
Get rid of members like Telkom first, then maybe you can regain some credibility.

Proudly SA No More?

Anyone want to add a tear?

{ Mods, can we merge the threads? }

What have Proudly SA ever offered anyone? An exorbitant fee to use their logo and...?

I've never quite seen the point of this whole campaign. You want the rest of the world to buy your exports but then locally try and encourage people not to buy theirs. Its protectionism essentially.

Perhaps you lot should first ask what it means to business in SA.

Maybe start with Anglo Vaal Industries whos National Brands Limited products all subscribe.

I know that retailers and end users like the fact that they're buying South African. Don't think for a moment the opinions expressed here are representitive of the opinions of SA business.

I agree that Proudly SA needs an overhaul, but don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

No - I will go out of my way to avoid PSA products where possible.
While Telkom shows that logo, it means NOTHING.

And how many others? Didn't PnP drop them after a few years? If SA business was so keen on Proudly SA they wouldn't be in the situation they're in now.

I'm certainly not against the concept of being proudly south african, or against the idea of buying south african, but I'm really not sure that membership of PSA offers any advantages.

I have never really subscribed to this PSA thingy. Did they actually invest some of the ludicrous sums of money that they got from people wanting to carry the logo, into something that will sustain enterprise and the local economy?

I think the PSA concept is a sound one and one that could really make a difference.
The flaw with it is/was (imho) that anyone could get onto this and use the logo as long as they paid the dosh.

As an example you have TELKOM as a founding and main member claiming everywhere that it is a 'proudly South African company' where nothing can be further from the truth.
They have all on their own held this country back and deprived millions access to technology and communications through lack of interest and inflated pricing, not to mention retrenching 66% of their staff over what must be about a 5-7 year period.

PSA is a sham if it allows members like this.
