Cape Town - A proposal to discard the Springbok and accept the Protea as the only emblem for all South African sports teams will be discussed at the ANC's policy conference in Midrand next week.

This could lead to the disappearance of the Springbok emblem that has been used since 1906.

Cedrick Frolick, ANC chief whip in the parliamentary sports portfolio committee, confirmed on Thursday that the disappearance of the Springbok would be raised at the conference.

"It's not only about the Springbok emblem but about uniform colours for all national teams in the interest of nation building," Frolick said.

"Some teams do not look like South African teams when they're on the field. The soccer team have a different strip every time they play.

"It has been decided twice that the Protea should be the only national sports emblem. The last time was in 1998. Talks about the application will now begin in earnest."

The DA rejected the idea, saying that the ANC, unlike former President Nelson Mandela, wrongly tried linking the Springbok with apartheid and ignored the Springbok story since 1994.

"The rejection of the Springbok emblem is like throwing away a treasure from our national heritage," DA spokesperson on sport Donald Lee said.

He said the ANC was deliberately forgetting the black, brown and Indian Springbok supporters.

Nothing distasteful about the emblem

"When Bryan Habana's mother thinks about the Springbok emblem it will certainly not be because of apartheid but because of her son's unbelievable performances for the Springboks.

"If Nelson Mandela could proudly wear a Springbok jersey with number six on the back there could be nothing distasteful about the emblem.

"When the players sing the national anthem with their hand on their heart, it is clear that the emblem shows how far we have come as a nation," Lee said.

Frolick said the power to decide on national sports colours was in the hands of the minister of sport.

The delegated power for execution rested with the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) that, in accordance with the new Sports Law, had to establish a national colours board for the awarding of all national colours.

Frolick had earlier told Rapport that the Springbok should disappear to complete transformation in rugby.

But it was more important that the SA Rugby Union should change its constitution first to have more say in managing transformation at provincial level.

"The Springbok still represents the old (racially divided) past. We should start looking at replacing the emblem," he said.

We won't become a nation by changing names or emblems, it will only divide us more. White people have compromised enough.
 
Personally I feel that if they are going to enforce racial quotas on the rugby team, then it is best that they not be the Springboks - let us store that, unsullied by the ANC, and save it for when this discriminatory nonsense is finished.

Why the race card? , and compromised? Sorry as a white i feel insulted, i havent compromised, i have adapted to new circumstances. Big diffs.
Any way as the article states, the sprinbok emblem is old, older than apartheid, so there is no reason to remove it.
It is a national institution, and should remain.

p.s. Mods could we poll this, it could be rather important.
 
This seems to come up often and it then gets a lot of media attention for the political trolls and then it goes away..

I think they are going a little bit too far with this one. It is an emblem that brings pride to this country more than any other emblem. I don't see them getting away with this. A poll would be nice.
 
Let the Springbok die and RIP. With all the stuff being planned for SA rugby by our political overlords it's better that way.

I kinda like the idea although the one glaring problem with this will be that the ANC will continue to demonise the Springbok forever and a day.
Wearing your Bok jersey or cap will be like waving the old SA Flag or the oranje blanje blou at a test match (to them at least)

Anyway, I find it staggering at just what can be considered justifiable under the auspices of 'transformation'. You can call the team anything at the end of the day, though that will not result in more players of colour competitively playing the game at the highest level.
When SARU and the idle politicians figure that one out things might change for the better.

agreed with gavin....this always comes up...and some new political troll tries to make a name for himself....they're like children looking for attention, because deep down everyone knows they're useless and thats why they become politicians.

Whites have been forced to compromise their culture and let go of their heritage which is not recognised as it should be.

The emblem is more than just a warm fuzzy feeling, it is a recognised logo, which will cause a big loss in related products.
 
Proudly South African BS! Politics must stay away from sport, players, their logos, names and the coaches and especially selection!
 
I can't help thinking we've been here before, and even then this idea was universally unpopular. Don't these people listen or take advice?
 
I find it strange that this thread is so small, maybe its in the wrong section, seems sports fans are just gatvol either way.

Maybe they can compromise and have the Springbok above the Protea? It would look like the Springbok is jumping over the flower of the Protea.:confused:

Putting all the reasons aside as to why we should or shouldn't have the Springbok used for our National Rugby Team, South Africa has been using the wrong symbol for our National Sporting Teams in my opinion.
It should have been The Athletic Springbok for all sports from the word go and our National Parks and other such Organisations that are linked to Nature could use The Protea.
The Protea is our National Flower in any event. A flower or plant can hardly be considered sporty, but an animal like The Springbok is altogether a different story.

Compare Springboks with Wallabies, Kiwi's, Cockerel's and Lions and they are all living things.

Haven't these people got anything better to do with themselves?

I think that if the transformation and quota issues are enforced by the government it will signal the end of populr support for SA teams anyway.

I will, for one, mourn the demise of the Springbok and all that it has stood for in the past (not including apartheid, for which i am deeply ashamed), the sportsmanship and national pride will be killed by BEE in sport and we will no longer be able to hold our heads high!!

I am proud to be counted as an african 1st and a south african second. My "white" heratage comes way down the list with the shame associated with being of "British" decent!
 
There is always the African way of doing things.

Strike/Boycott the Rugby Stadiums.
Without the Ticket Sales there won't be Rugby Matches - at least not attended matches.
Everyone could just simply stay at home and watch the game on TV.

If there is nobody supporting Rugby then one may even find the big sponsors suddenly all making excuses on how their Advertising Budgets cannot afford to punt Rugby.

It is like other emblems/names that the ANC wanted to change. The JSE for instance. Established in 1887. My Great Great Grandfather was still alive then. :rolleyes:
How the heck can you change a name that is synonymous with Africa's largest Stock Exchange.

The Springbok Emblem which on my opinion is a far better logo than a flower for sport for obvious reasons.
Why fix what ain't broken??? :confused::confused::confused:
