$300,000 in Surprise Excess Baggage

A passenger on a flight Thursday from the Latvian capital Riga was surprised to find on arrival in Austria that her bag was heavier than before -- about 300,000 dollars heavier.

The cash was part of some 4.4 million euros (5.9 million dollars) that the Bank of Latvia was transfering in three bags to the headquarters of the Raiffesen Bank in Vienna, Austrian television reported.

Robbers apparently took the money from one of the bags at Riga airport, but panicked and stuffed thousands of 100-dollar bills into the luggage of a female passenger which then ended up in the hold of the plane.

On arrival, the passenger then took the money to the police, who excluded her completely from any blame over the incident.
