Dont know what to say really, depressing, frustrating, distressing, etc.
This woman has publicly admitted that she doesn't even have a clue what her phone bill is so detached is she from reality, she also only wants others 'that look like her' to be involved/benefit whatever that means and it is questionable what level of understanding, if any, she has of how modern technology (or the lack of) affects people and industry in SA.
That said we have a health minister who's policy kills hundreds of people everyday in this country and she still has her job, so there is little hope that Ivy will ever be replaced whilst she is still breathing.

During the same speech, she spoke about the infamous ‘digital divide’, saying that recently she had been made painfully aware of this when she was reminded by an interviewer that, in Sandton, a businessman or housewife complains about not being able to get 64 Kbps of broadband speed at home when, down the road in Alexandra township, the majority of its residents don’t even have a telephone to call for medical help or police assistance.

and whose fault is that Ivy?????

The teleportation comment was just classic. Thumbs up to Rodney Weidermann, I enjoyed your column immensely.

Thanks to Rodney Weide/Weidermann for writing the article :)
The teleport comment being the icing on the cake :p

I wish Ivy could be brought to book for her crime of being out of touch with reality...

How is it that Latvia can have std speeds of 10mbps? Is it a case of Telkom throttling our ADSL 'lines' to keep bandwidth artificially scarce?

Absolutely!
I think the same thing is going to happen to Wimax. It may depend on what Neotel brings to the market.
From what I heard from people trialling Wimax the speeds are equivalent to 384Kb ADSL.
Anyway let me not judge the product before it comes to market. :)

"Absolutely"

Nah not that. Be telkom saving bandwidth on sat3 in case of a tsunami!

Episode 1
Captain IVY of the Starship DoC: "Beam me up Telkom!"
Telkom to Captain IVY: "But we don't have enough bandwidth, we only have 64k Captain!"
Captain IVY: "<sigh> I shouldn't have taken a shaped line....."

Episode 2
Captain IVY's star log, dated 1 November 2011: "The local loop unbundling process has started, we expect to be completed by ... uh ... err ... <rolls dice/cast bones><does math> 1 November 2110.

alternative plot episode1:
Captain IVY of the Starship DoC: "Beam me up Telkom!"
Telkom to Captain IVY: Yes Sir!
IVY gets Transported
IVY to Telkom: Where is my arm?
Telkom: Sorry that packet got shaped and got dropped as a result
IVY: And where are my legs?
Telkom: Sorry you got Capped, we figured 3GB would be more than enough. After all someone once said you would never need more than 640K.

These are lovely! LOL!

The transporter also has a 100kg cap, so half of Ivy's donut collection wouldn't make it anyway!
:D
