The system will allow taxi commuters to use their electronic bank cards to pay for their fares.

Ooooh bank cards, many of them struggle to find the change in their purses to pay for the fare, what makes you think they even have bank account let alone a card?

“This will assist in eradicating accidents on the roads as our drivers will not be compelled to make transactions while driving,” said Santaco secretary-general Phillip Taaibosch.

I say doit. But .. for heavens sake, do it properly, the LAST thing you implment is the system in the taxi, not the FIRST thing mkay.
Hopefully they have learnt something by now.
 
There was a proposal like this before and it got shelved because of driver protests. Wonder what makes them think that it'll work this time round?

I don't get why they're against actually improving things and making use of what's available in technology. Oh well, I guess theres lot's of things about taxi drivers I'll never understand.
 
In addition, plans are at an advanced stage to launch a call centre where commuters and other road users can register complaints about the behaviour of taxi drivers.

hmmm, I wonder if anything could curb the Taxi drivers's bad attitudes?
 
Using bank cards to pay,,, will commuters be billed by their banks for the transaction?????

I can see the suits and bean counters already licking their lips at more revenue from the poor!

Yeah - R10 taxi fare, R2.50 transaction fee.
Or R10 taxi fee - screeching halt, commuter thrown off for failure of transaction, followed by a R150 bounced transaction fee "to teach bank client manners".
 
First replace the drivers with models that are actually human and have some ingrained sense of value of human life.

I think it'll make it a bit harder for taxi operators to lie to SARS about their profits. It's alot easier to cheat on tax when you run a cash only business.
 
or to cheat the taxi boss
or to tell the customer who pays R9 with a R10 that you "have no change"
or to squeeze 20 people into one taxi (with a electronic system, this can be monitored better)

on the plus side,
it is easier to subsidise fuel - every one customer = x cents of fuel subsidy etc
it is easier to monitor routes - a timestamp on transactions will determine volumes
a "swipe out" system linked to a GPS type "station stop" will be awesome. will be able to monitor taxi "fullness" between sites and at times - will lead to better utilization = better profits and better for commuters.

The sky is indeed the limit.
(Although in this case, full of pie).

perhaps I will be proven wrong and forced to eat humble pie.

(OK - no more pie jokes, promise!)

I think those points got raised last time around as well
 
are these the same ones that use a spanner as a steering wheel, with a 10L gerrycan perched on the passenger seat which acts as a petrol tank? :0)
 
The only way anything like this will succeed in the current Taxi industry is if it is enforced by law.

New laws are pointless otherwise (like traffic laws for example).

absolutely right!
don't you think they should first follow through with the rolling out of the new taxis first?If memory serves me correct a report at the end of 2006 mentioned that they were not anywhere close as to where they should have been in terms of replacing the old taxis. I would like to see an update on the progress of this drive!

the taxis are a law unto themselves, I cannot see this initiative succeeding, just look at the past in terms of how the taxi unions have reacted.
