What's the best way to clone/image a hdd?

Hey guys, I'm thinking of buying a new 320GB hdd soon.

What's the best way to clone my installation? I'd appreciate it if I don't have to use a Norton a product ;) Are there freeware alternatives which do a good job?

If there isn't, which trialware would you recommend? I've heard of Acronis, but don't know much about it.

Now the question, I've got about 140GB used of my 200GB drive at the moment. If I clone my harddrive and place it on the new 320GB, would the installation show that I have a 320GB hdd, or would I need to change settings?

I read about Acronis, I don't like it really, it only supported email backups in version 10? That's a bit lame if you ask me, I want to image/clone my "entire" harddrive, not just a few files ;)
 
A fresh install is starting to sound much easier lol :p

The Acronis description on their site says that version 10 supports email backups, what did you do in the past? I've installed so many OS's in the past it's not even funny.

I don't want 10000 documents to be lost dude ;)

Okay, thanks dude ;) And my earlier questions about the partitions?
 
You should simply be able to use it to resize the partitions to cover the full disk if you want. Pretty much the same as Partition Magic.
 
I've never uses Partition Magic either, I don't see the use in creating partitions for a 200GB drive ;)

320GB is another story :D :p
 
Yeah, you can partition the disk into as many as you want. Any free space you can play with. Create new partitions, resize etc.

I use ghost 2003. Still one of the best and fairly quick. This has been superceded by other "Ghost" versions but I found 2003 still the best and safest, works via DOS, and so does many peeps on the net. Need a copy? its full house on the net.
 
You are saying I should use a Norton product? NEVER!!!! muahahahah! never I say !!!!!! muahahah! :D ;) :p
