http://www.icann.org/ but if youre looking for a registrar there are loads of them. [-]Network Solutions[/-], Tucows, Yahoo . . .

Isn't the easiest way doing it through a hosting company? I've dealt with www.texo.co.za before and the domain was registered within a few hours. It wasn't .com however.

Texo is also a member of this forum and he's a really cool guy, if you don't want to go through these hassles, check out his site ;)
 
Some hosting company's charge too much for a .com domain. You have to shop around

My advice, register yourself a .za.net domain for free, here are the basic steps:
  1. Check if the domain name you want is available, e.g. akash.za.net, using this link: http://www.za.net/whois.html
  2. Read the following so you understand the process etc: http://www.za.net/howto.html
  3. Once you have found a .za.net domain name that you want to register, go to http://zoneedit.com/ and create a free a/c there to host the DNS for your 'soon' to be registered .za.net domain name, add the domain name by adding a new zone, take note of the DNS servers & IP addresses, ignore the fact that zoneedit.com will complain that the domain name is not yet registered.
  4. Now do the actual domain name registration, using the following url: http://www.za.net/register.html, be sure to enter the DNS servers & IP addresses you got from adding your zone on ZoneEdit.com.
  5. Be patient, and check where your domain registration is in the queue using the following link: http://www.za.net/status.html - it usually takes ~3 weeks, but then it is a free domain name...

Oops, I probably jumped to the wrong conclusion:o. I seems such a waste to have just a single line of text on a website. A few pictures, or family history, or family tree, just a few pages of anything would be better than that:(

The problem with GoDaddy is they actually own the domain name. You pay for it but they still own it. Also they can take it away from you if you don't update it regularly

I don't believe this is the case. What has occured in the past is that GoDaddy cancelled someone's domain because the were not contactable. ICANN rules state that the information on the whois database has to be correct.

Yea you will need someone to host the site still. Zoneedit does offer a service where they host a temp "under contruction" page for you, but thats not really a solution in the long run. I also don't recall how flexible that page is, if at all.

On a side note, I used zoneedit recently to get a .com for me, their prices didnt seem too bad compared to everyone else, and it was still in my first 5 domains, so I didnt have to worry about getting more dns hosting.
