Helloes,

I want to start an open discussion here, because alot of people seem to think private servers are illegal.

I run SArealm

Feel free to join and check it out lol ;)

These two facts remain:
*In blizzards EULA, a statement reads as follows:
". . .rsonal gain. All services rendered by Vivendi and Blizzard ,either directly or indirectly, belong to their respective owners, thus financial gain by the use of any such services would be a criminal offense. These include featured content, emulation, web cont. . . blah blah blah. . ."

*Secondly, downloading the game from the internet would obviously be illegal.

This brings me to the conclusion that the only illegal thing involved here is where the player gets his copy of wow, as the server software itself contains no "featured content" and SArealm does NOT ask any payment of any sort.

I wanna hear what you feel like ;)
Oh, and please dont look at this in a stereotipe manner. YES, I know private will never be WoW. . .

Regards,
TehAvatar

o.O Can some admin please change my name from "tehavatar" to "TehAvatar"

Thanks :)

I personally have no problem with it.

The problem is the following.

The official servers has 100's of players online. On and Emu you'll prob. be 1 of 10 players. If you can have the server packed to capasity let me know. Uless that happens I'm glad to play the official WoW. ;)

Errr...I assume by your original statement then the WoW server software is available as a freeware download??

Fudzy: I understand the servers are reverse engineered - I could (as is common) be WAY wrong :-).

I see quite a bit of the wow website is copied on your site. I'm pretty sure those pictures are copyrighted somewhere. Look, I'm not about to get on my high horse about rights & wrongs of piracy but doing it in such a public fashion is just not cricket.

Jeez, highly paid US corporate lawyers could argue this one for years (or until the money ran out).

I don't think it's illegal as such. At least not in SA. Downloading the software is also not illegal. It is probably a copyright violation however the copyright holder needs to register his copyright here for it to be so, which I doubt they have. It's trivial to do, but they probably haven't got around to it as they have no presence here.

Moraly? Well Blizzard don't support SA no matter how much they say they do. They will officially supply their product here, but no support, no servers etc. So if playing on a pirate server floats your boat, then go for it.

(PS. Watching a pirate DVD is NOT theft, no matter how many times the corporations tell you it is. It's merely copyright violation. and don't try the "morally" it's theft argument. Mafia Don's are more moral than corporate America.).

It is probably illegal in the states, but the since the US system is designed to have senators / congressmen directly gain the major share of their income from corporations, almost everything those corporations don't like is.

Many moons ago I played on emu server and it crash...POOF when my char and they could not restore it.....never again and the online peeps is much greater!

SArealm has a community of about 200 constant players, of which about 50 are almost always online. I agree, this compares nothing to Blizz* 6 million players, but its about the local community and the 50ms latency :)

Correct. The software from which the server was originally built, was called WoWD , this was simply an interface that could interpret the data received from the client (received as encrypted packet) and then translate it to a readable packet (opcode)

WoWD was made a VERY long time ago, and now it is the core of the popular emulator MaNGOS.

WoWD was created using a packet sniffer, a simple program that reads what a program transmits to a certain network.

Certainly an emulation can never be done perfect. This was evident in the era of Playstation and Nes emulators. However, The crew working on MaNGOS (The emulator) is getting increasingly larger, daily. Almost every hour a new update to the core server software gets released.

Between about 5 months ago and today MaNGOS has changed dramatically. We now have quite a stable emulator, capable of doing most of the things you would be able to do on official servers.

well if u have like 50 people online then a EMU server can work out to your advantage....Nowadays u only need 25 people to do raids,And if the EMU server is pre TBC then all you need is 40 people for the old raids.

The only thing a EMU server will miss is the vast numbers of people LFG's and the chitchat in game channels.

If you where to have 200 players online any given time I'll roll a char just for fun. However I'll still be playing the Legal server also :D

Anyone want to post a more detailed EULA?

why isnt this in the World of Wacraft section?

Believe me, theres no shortage to chit-chats ;)
And the server is TBC, raids arent a problem.

How do you ensure that the users logging in have legal, paid for copies of WoW? I downloaded mine from Blizzard and subsequently bought a key off the site. You wouldn't have any record of that surely?

All u need is the game client.

Copied, pasted, crafted, hand written.. doesn't matter. That is what an Emu server is. He's saying you can used the server with what ever u have. But he's not promoting Piracy. Maybe read the whole thread ;)

Edit: oops sorry my bad.

The other thread is in the WoW sub-forum

Yes, im not promoting piracy, and if a user logs on with an illegal client, then that is out of my hands.

Excellent I'll be checking it out ! I thought I was going to throw my WOW away until now.

Er, you are running whats commonly known as a Pirate server. Don't know what you mean by promoting piracy, but you are most certainly engaging in piracy.

Personally I wouldn't bother justifying what you are doing. It is what it is. Whether it's a bad thing is another question all together. I have no problem with you doing it as long as there is no local ZA realm. If Blizzard don't think it's worth their while to properly launch in SA then they are clearly "promoting piracy". If you guys want to play on a 2nd rate server with good pings then ho ho ho and a bottle of rum to you all! I'd cheerfully keelhaul you if I thought it would help get us a realm though. ;)
