Standard Bank, universities in drive to attract school leavers back to IT

Its easy to get kids interested in computers/IT.. Games!

Computer games, you will be amazed to see the lenghts kids will go to to play a game and they learn things along the way. How to copy Quake 2 across the network and more. I got started off with Civilizations. I couldn't do take Computer Study at school cause my maths mark wasnt high enough, all i know PC wise I learned after I finished school.
 
Trouble shooting why leisure suit and lhx wouldnt run (DOS), then building DOS menu's .... aaah ... the good old days :)

I find this disturbing! I have heard this so often! For the folks who want to learn programming, the math requirement can stay, but the hardware geeks need not be hampered by a math requirement. They should then split computer science into two different classes.

Being a brilliant PC technician and brilliant software engineer are two different ballgames and sometimes mutually exclusive. Some coders struggle with networking and taking the system apart. Just like hardware guys sometimes cannot programme jack.
 
It is now split into two, one is Programming, the other is Computer Typing I think, but I would not have wanted to do computer typing. I can actually program a bit, though my maths sucks...
 
IT high paying? mmm i must ask for more money then...
 
I personally think this whole IT Skills crisis is largely rubbish.. or at least blown WAY out of proportion so these big companies have an excuse to head hunt from overseas...
 
We need our kids to be educated, right, they cry about shortages in the IT world, i've got a son who desprately wants to do a BSc ( SofDev ) at Rhodes, BUT the fees are out of my reach, I cant get a bursary because of the AA, believe I've tried, and still trying, so we loose another hopefull. Sorry about the gripe, but its true :sick:

Skilled IT people can get a job overseas, in a civilized country, very easily....

I wasn't allowed to do Computer Science 'cos my Afrikaans marks were not good enough. .. go figure..
 
I wish they would say what sector of IT is having the brain drain then it would make my life a little bit easier in choosing a path to take regarding studies...

I have a friend leaving SA because he cant get a job as a web developer/programmer...
 
Be specific

The High paying Jobs they talking about is Devolopers like SAP or Oracle folk.Not the Lowly Technician that has to ride the countryside flat to earn next to nothing and his car 1.3Litre gains almost 4-5000km a month and he get gets as little as R2500 for petrol.The rest comes out his salary.

Be realistic those are the guys that put The I INTO IT.We the first line support we should be getting the high paid jobs.
Even if you got MSCE you still get a low salary.So whats the point.Also if wanna get into a position you want its who you know.

The guys who do get an opportunity to go to University they become high level professionals that Dont know squatt how to handle IT related problems.System Analysts make more on just telling companies what to do than doing the physical work.Ask a network techie he'll know.

Get the Salary Spec right and then you can grow your prodigy .Start investing in your staff in your own backyard.
 
Until SA companies change their attitude towards IT it will continue to not be an attractive option for new students.
