Ok, i have searched and yet i don't know what to really search for.

The thing is, I have an upto 4mb telkom ADSL line and get about 3.6mb downstream on it.
I'm a battlefield2 player and sometimes wish i could play on international servers, but this is imposible due to the fact that i get a ping above 200 and punkbuster will kick me from their servers.:(

What would be a solution to this? Unshapped adsl? diginet? leased line?

Thank you in advance.:D

hey you asault dude :P

i am using verizon - did play on a 24/7 wake server early this morning - got a ping of 198-210 ms. (server in uk)

very playable

vanilla.co.za can help u out here

kk

But that server is not ranked :( is it?

I'm looking to upgrade my line or account or whatever, i urge the need for international play, not local only

Oh yeah, im the asault dude yes :D

Not unless you're whoring it up in armour :)

No matter what sort of line you're going to use, your ping will always suck :(
PPL in OZ/NZ also moan about 200+ pings to servers in the US/Europe.

You can find some servers which won't kick for high ping (it's not PB that kicks, it's a server setting that you can access that limits pings) However, from reading OS forums it seems that many many servers OS are full of retards and spaniards, so basically it's not really worth going there to play.

Granted SGS only have 4 BF2 servers and you may get tired of the same old faces, but we have a very healthy community here who, for the most part, aren't spaniards :)

Double Post ftw

Soz for double post, but your ISP there (vanilla) is fail my friend. R290 for 3gig .... thats insanity.

Try looking at a 10gig account for R449 @ www.sainet.co.za/homedsl.htm

Plus the ISP accounts supports upto 4mb lines too.

Sorry, if vanilla is a family buisiness or friends contact of you, not meaning to insullt you or anybody.

[UPDATE] reply to schitz011

Yeh well, the thing is sometimes i like playing in the time people dont play in SA .... so then there are no servers up, and its 3 servers i know of, Ranked 1, Urban 1 (infantry only) and Urban2, the other one is a clan server. thats all.

No comparison really, Vanilla sells unshaped Verizon accounts, SAInet sells shaped SAIX accounts.

Ok, soz

My humble appoligies then.

I didnt know that and appoligise for my ignorance.

Still my question would then be wether i would be able to get lower pings under 200 to uk/us servers with unshaped accounts?

No you would not since the distance that the servers are away from you. Light has a finite speed and 180-220ms is really as good as it will get for us ever, unless there is a faster way to send data other than light.

Physics for the lose =\

Simpler than that you could not explain.

Thank you for your explanation

Im looking at Goal unshaped acount of 15gig at R952.
This should work nice on my upto 4mb line which i get an average of 3.6mb at any given time.

Can someone maybe confirm this opinion of mine?, or am i wrong?

fridge - that UK one is a ranked server
BBUK aka bodybags 24/7 wake server... and yes with 210 odd ping u can play bf2..

who said that u must go for 3gb with vanilla? they sell 1gb aswell.

its ok fridge, i can see you are stil finding your way around the available ISP arenas

read carefully , digest carefully , think carefully , lol

384 or 4096 - aint gonna do u jack in terms of lower latencies

ISDN 128k can even give better latencies.

so its a tricky business.

Yeh, i have heard lots of roomers and stories etc... so im with you on the tricky buisiness thing :)

I have gone through carefully with goal and so far it all looks good, just waiting for my last reply on the concerrent sesions for their accounts.

Plus its month to month based accounts and the price is good, so might just give it a bash and check the results.

Oh, and thnx, i played on a wake only server before which was not ranked and thought you were refering to that one, but ill go check that one up and maybe see you there too :D

I told you okes before they will invent GAMMA wave transmitters or GRAVITY waves one day then we will get pings to US/UK under 100ms :p:p:p

AFAIK light only travels 2 thirds its max speed on Earth as it is not a vacuum as in space. Vacuum packed cables maybe  ??! :p

I think the answer is lower bandwidth prices. Then SA servers will start to pop-up because of the increased uptake of broadband.

At one very VERY inexplicable time of when I had sentech back in the day, I could ping a server in the UK at 120ms

Thats the lowest ive ever seen it anywhere! Maybe I was connected straight to the docking terminals of the submarine cable that connects SA to other countries *shrug*

What about diginet? Surely latencies are lower on that tech?
Have a look through here: http://www.hellkom.co.za/ispprices/adsl-10gb.php

Fridgewheel, would you seriously spend a grand just to play BF2 overseas?
Am I missing something here??

The current in a copper cable will travel 2/3 the speed of light. Take a look at this thread below. It is implied that fibre optics are different, so only if the whole infrastructure was converted to fibre optics would we see a general improvement in latency. However still not significant enough as we all would hope.

Oh yes and excuse more of my weed smoking in the thread link :p Check it out though, we discuss and calculate the max speed :)

Turning the question around: what are the best games for the international line?

Besides this BF2 instance on a single UK server, what other FPS can be played on overseas servers with a 200+ms ping? Trying BF1942 a while back, if the server runs Punkbuster, you get kicked. And I once played on a Joint Ops server for a few minutes. My best experience so far has been playing Red Orchestra.
