Looking at Wi-Fi connectivity for your office? Here’s how …

It is very easy to set up a Wireless access network. The writer of the article also talks about dead spots. The way to eliminate the dead spots is to use additional routers that is set up as Wireless Distributors of the Wifi Signal.

I am using in my house the wireless access points of Apple. The main wireless access point is a Apple Extreme base station and this is supplemented with two Apple Express base stations acting as Wireless distibutors. It is nice to have Wifi in every room in a very big house and no cables running in the house.

We seem to be running the same setup :D

Besides the fact that business associates and customers will be able to plug into your wireless network and work at your office, a key advantage is that one wireless router can accommodate more than 25 devices, so you can have a lot more users plugged into the wireless network than a wired network.

The article does not give meaning full info on security. Using WEP even with good passwords offers little security. Read upon security before putting in a wirless network, or you may be hacked.
 
I find wireless usb and pci cards especially those that require their own software give endless trouble, users having to unplug and plug them back in every few days. General rule of thumb, use wire where you can!

what? there is a limit to the number of users on a wired network suddenly?

Nope, you got switch/router ports you got connections...

Also not that all the uses using a wireless AP will be sharing the bandwidth of that AP. So when someone decides to copy all the mp3s to the server there will be a performance hit for everyone else...

Wireless is very useful for general office, email, doccy writers. Provides a flexible solution for low bandwidth / occasional high bandwith users with less infrastructure to worry about.

Cabled solution will win for power users...
 
Does anyone use Telkom's free wi-fi modem??

I'm getting one this week and I'm just wondering whether to use an ethernet cable or wi-fi to connect to it? Anyone using wi-fi to connect to it?
 
The 5102g (black wifi router) works extremely well after upgrading the firmware.

I've been using it for more than a week now without serious issues so far.

A suggestion : To make it more secure, put the wifi router on another segment of the network, and use VPN to connect to your main server. This way, should it be hacked, your data will remain safe and the ne'er-do-wells will be wasting their time in getting to your data.
